Phoenix Park 2yo Classic (G3)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

No winner came from further back than fifth turning for home all day on what is always a biased towards on pacers venue when the footing is dry and more so today with the rail out 3m so it was in fact even more manmade or man-hanced. This G3 juvenile field was not a very strong field and only had seven runners with just two of them having won a race. Bit Lippy, a maiden prior to today, sat fourth the outer and came up wide second nearing the home turn before taking the lead at the 250m. The gelding held on well to score by three-quarters of a length and clocked 1:10.07, which is not a great time and in fact all day the times were nothing special on dry ground. In some races runners were beaten by big margins so it must have been the footing was too dry for them or too hard, as big defeats happen on bog tracks but outside injury several today got beaten large amounts. Bit Lippy has been placed in his first three starts and all had come at blacktype level so the win was certainly deserved. He has placed twice behind Melt, which looks the best juvenile at the moment in New Zealand and notably it was not Karaka Millions eligible. Platinum Mam’selle ran on strongly for second after setting down in the rear trio and the filly looks readymade for the G1 1400m feature on her home track at the end of next month. She had won a race prior Handsome Rebel ran a sound third after also settling in the rear trio plus he was still sixth with 100m to go and then got his second wind and unleashed well like he too will handle more than 1200m. He got third on the post and his best work was definitely the closing stages. Wisdom Patch sat second the outer and was third turning for home only to lose that placing on the line. The colt started favourite and was the other winner in the field prior so from that perspective disappointed overall. Gallagher was last away but kicked through to trail third the inner then ended up fourth the inner across the top before working off and being fifth turning for home. He fought on okay all things considered. Spirit Aubeer came out running on debut and was a length clear after 400m going freely considering he had not been officially trialled prior. He got headed at the 250m and weakened to sixth beaten two and three-quarters of a length but look out when he runs against all maidens as it could be top shelf all around at the post. Flaunt It Girl was wide in the rear trio and covered more ground than any other runner so to be beaten only just over three lengths was an unsung effort. There are winners to come out of this race and while most are not Group level if properly race placed they can more than get training expenses covered.
