Woburn Farm 2yo Classic (G3)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This G3 1200m for juveniles saw the worst ridden runner prevail in Miss Federer and the field of seven had six fillies with the lone male beating one home. The rail was out 5m and saw an already massively biased towards leaders and the insides lanes New Plymouth track become an even more manmade biased course all day. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (length clear the inside), third (trail leaders inner and a length away), led (neck clear inner), co-leader (two-off the inside), fifth (three-wide and two lengths from the leader), led (length clear the inner), third (four-off and a length from the leader) and fourth (one-off and a length and a half from the leader). No winner came from further back than two lengths from the leader or worse than fifth plus four of the leaders won and two trailing the leaders won. Miss Federer at her prior start had run an inglorious last beaten over thirty-one lengths clockwise at Ellerslie behind the since Karaka Million winner Probabeel. Today the filly left-handed and meeting inferior depth even if a G3 race was wide attacking for the lead and quite incredibly could not get over so maintained the rage deep to the home turn. The filly led at the 300m and was sitting duck thereafter but fought off a rival that looked sure to beat her at the 200m and 100m. Miss Federer won by a long neck in 1:10.47 and recorded her third win in five starts and now has a G3 success to go with her Listed victory in the South Island. Hastobegood was crowded early and settled down sixth then the filly found herself last across the top but came up wide before the home turn having not spent a penny. She surged from fifth turning in to reach an ominous second at the 200m and 100m looking sure to win but the tote favourite could not get by the winner. Last Sight, the stablemate of the runner up, began awkwardly and was last away then charged up fifth the inner bolting across the top before working off then getting held up, She ran on well for a distant third but her win chances were gone with the ordinary jump and manmade track bias on display. Folk Dress on debut had inspired support and ran second favourite but a crowded start saw her have to be used up to boot through onto the pace and she then attacked for the lead keeping the eventual winner wide throughout in fact. She weakened the run in as the occasion got to the inexperienced filly but she has the physique and looks to be a name for the future. Tumbleweed ran on late from last turning in while the lone male in the race Scotch was four-wide in the lead early before being eased to fourth then weakened the run home. Amazing Team was poor from the trail and stopped badly. This was not a G3 level field at all and Listed at best and the worst ridden runner by miles tactically prevailed. Miss Federer in her two South Island wins beat Challa each time and it ran dead last beaten out of sight (almost thirty-two lengths) in the Karaka Million. The filly throws out a front right leg too so is not a pretty sight but the fight and will to win is there and that is all that matters. Hastobegood is a winner in waiting and her stablemate Last Sight already looks an Oaks type for next season on her breeding and racing manner. Folk Dress may end up the best of this field in the future while Scotch deserves another chance.
