Champagne Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 2yo over 1600m was one of if not the weakest runnings of this with a small field and only one runner having won a race. The track at Pukekohe was a bog and got worse throughout the day making for racing suited to swimmers at a meeting that is usually Ellerslie but that circuit is currently under repair and rehabilitation. Rubira, an Australian bred maiden filly that had not even paid a dividend prior to today in two starts won this easily after trailing her stablemate (which finished second). The filly led at the 200m and was holding with ease to score by a length in 1:42.79. Ole Ole, the equal favourite, soon led up and tried to fight back when his stablemate went past and ended up second while the equal favourite More Wonder, the only race winner in the field, finished third. More Wonder never at any stage looked a win hope after being let drop to last and then got steered closest in the run home that was an obvious no go area, so bettors knew their fate a long way out. Our Beeskees finished fourth beaten three lengths after settling down fifth and did poke through briefly to third at the 300m before battling in the conditions. Danelyn was last away then moved up fourth wide and battled away for fifth beaten just over three lengths, so being put in the race at least to some extent helped her cause and was in stark comparison to More Wonder. Elle D'Berry never looked a hope from second last on settling while Capellani sat outside the leader and weakened to be beaten just under five lengths. He was the stablemate of the favourite More Wonder that in hindsight would have been better to be sent up second as his racing pattern showed in all prior five starts. This was a poor field and held on awful footing so is dubious beyond belief. Usually a late season mile juvenile unearths some 3yo middle distance types for next season but this was a weak lot and outside the first three home there does not look much scope at all. This would be the weakest blacktype juvenile event held in the North Island this season and is an ominous warning of breeding stocks and racing numbers indeed.
