Splice Construction 2yo Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This 2yo at Listed level over 1100m saw a very promising Australian bred filly in Bavella outclass her rivals after sitting third wide in the running, which was not a negative the way the track was presented, and she strode up and led at the 300m. The track at Pukekohe copped some rain in the morning and was downgraded from a Dead5 to a Slow7 and it raced biased all day. The winners and where they turned for home in order were third and widest, fifth and second widest, third and wide, fourth and second widest, ninth inner (four lengths off lead…angled off at 400m), thirteenth and widest (four and a half lengths off lead), led (five off fence), third (six-off the fence) then finally fourth and second widest. To say the insides lanes were no go areas and a surefire loser all day is an understatement and the times were two to three seconds and a lot more in some events inferior to standard. The track was very biased against leaders (none won all day) with a couple of thirds only to show for the pacesetters throughout the nine race card and this circuit is very flat so leaders can often pinch winning breaks. Bavella revelled in the ground and powered away to score by almost four lengths in 1:07.50 to remain undefeated and being out of a Zabeel dam has it all to come still. Aalaalune has a lot of the letter A in her name and the debutante ran on strongly for second after settling down fifth the outer and then getting into second with 100m to go. Blackrocksdetox also on debut ran a ripper third albeit distant after being slow away and a clear last on settling down. He is out of a Zabeel dam and looks a name to mark down now as a player when the trips get longer but also as a likely Group force as a 3yo. She's A Lady disputed the pace to the home turn and on a day leaders were no chance of winning and she weakened to finish fourth beaten over seven lengths. On debut prior she had finished second to the winner Bavella and was beaten just over a length so the loss of margin today is quite eye opening as she sat third wide that day. Today we saw Bavella sit wide third (she disputed the lead on debut to win) and She's A Lady dispute the pace and lose six lengths, which does show how this track was presented and raced today. Vistock and Thousandkissesdeep were outclassed while Maybeashowoff, the only other winner in the field today, disputed the pace and stopped badly to finish last. Five of the nine races today at Pukekohe where won by non-New Zealand breds and significantly three of those five wins came in the blacktype events. Australian breds formed the quinella in a G2 fillies and mares event at 1400m, won this Listed juvenile event over 1100m and formed the quinella in an Open Handicap mile, while Germany provided the G2 2100m Cup winner and Ireland won a Benchmark 85 at 1400m. Over half the card were won by non-New Zealand breds and at a range of distances and age groups tellingly. Not a very strong field but the winner Bavella has upside galore and not being Karaka Millions eligible she could target the two G1 juvenile races in New Zealand and be a massive threat. Maybe she will venture to Australia chasing the more meaningful blacktype. Blackrocksdetox is a name to remember plus in a stable that have not had good young horse in quite a while and this gelding has that G1 3yo feel about him already if looked after, as time is on his side.
