This Listed Open Handicap mile saw the clear favourite Vernanme out-tough his rivals and win his first race as a now 4yo. Seven of the eight winners came from no worse than fifth turning for home (two led, one was second the outer, three sat fourth and the other was fifth) and the most number of lengths made up was just two lengths from the leader. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were co-leader (one-off the inside), fourth (five -off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), ninth (on the rail and four lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and three lengths ahead), fifth (four-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), fourth (five-off the inside and a length from the leader) and fourth (one-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader). Vernanme prior to today had won a single race, a 10K maiden at Pukekohe on a Friday, yet was winning this Listed Open Handicap mile with 56kg on his back incredibly. He wore the saddlecloth number nine so three runners carried less weight than him and one mare that has won four races carried the same as him. The strapping entire raced fifth or sixth the outer and came up wide near the home turn to be ominously close turning in then took the front at the 200m and held them all out by a beck. He clocked 1:36.03 so the track was iffy as that is a poor time for a supposed Dead5 track. Vernanme was winning his second race from ten starts and his first at Blacktype and it now goes with his 3yo placings at G1 and G2. Concert Hall closed strongly from seventh or eighth on setting and the mare carried 1kg more than the winner. Fiscal Fantasy ran on well from back on the inner on settling and the four-win mare carried half a kilo less than the winner Smart As You Think ran on well for fourth and a win is close at hand for this formerly prepared in Australia mare. Athena Baby ran on well from tenth on settling. Hinerangi was just fair from being handy on the inner and Te Toro Pearl had no finish after racing fourth the outer. Major Tom plugged on from the rear duo like the stayer he is and Battle Time was a weak ninth after sitting second the outer. Verry Flash settled back and plugged on late but he is a deadset wet tracker and is ineffective on footing dead or firmer. Deluxe Edition was outclassed and Admiral, which won this race three years ago by five six lengths, led up and stopped badly and he is clearly a wet tracker only. Vernanme has more wins in store for sure and should be able to handle WFA this season too in New Zealand. The mares that ran second, third and fourth are all winners in waiting. This was not a strong field overall and of the dozen runners most are wet trackers so got exposed in the dead conditions. Too many of this field also were out of form or had not won for ages, so it had no real depth and the winner getting 56kg when just a one-win galloper says all you need to know.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
