Slice Of Class won an unusually run G3 for fillies and mares and on a day where some times compared to others left the head being scratched on a Good3 rated track by officials. It was a race that certainly had its share of flops and problems too. The winning mare is lightly tried and must have improved tenfold this season to beat this line up at 55kg under the weight scale of the race. She did get a soft run on the fence and got out the run home to bury them and clocked 1:22.86, which was the best 1400m time on the day by almost a second (six lengths). The runner up Pinzaara and third finisher Sucre sat outside the pace and in the trail on the inner respectively so there in sees the race pattern and result in the main. The fourth finisher Perfect Start sat out the back wide but crucially her rider came though closer in from the home turn where clearly faster lanes existed. The race was also significant for some big flops although it would pay to forgive Costa Viva after she slipped at the start. The Solitaire was terrible but she was back and wide turning for home plus is many lengths better than that so something may be amiss. Britt Ekland sat fourth the outer and did nothing the run home but is yet to win left-handed so it may have been a combination of direction and the trip down from the North Island. Shroud never looked her usual self from the outset and was found to have bled plus connections hinted she will be retired. All in a race of many stories and Slice Of Class came with the stoutest finish to win well. Whether she can measure up against her own sex in fields of more depth and less problems that some of her rivals encountered is still an unknown.
