Valachi Downs C'bury Breeders (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

This G3 for only fillies and mares provided a grandstand finish with the first six over the line all within a length of each other. Miss Alice speared through very late three-off to get up and win by a head after a typical patient ride by jockey Chris Johnson. The mare was not going to run a place 50m out but sprouted wings the closing stages to win her sixth race from twenty-five starts. The time of 1:23.41 was only the second best clocking on the card so while a solid posting it did show this event was run more intensely early on and across the top. It was her first blacktype earned too having best achieved prior a fourth at Listed level when a 3yo filly. Emerald Queen was brave in defeat having sat wide and then surging to the front at the 100m only to but cut down on the post. Sucre was also not going to pay a dividend 50m out then drove through strongly four-off to get third money. Also finding the line potently was Another Coup to finish fourth beaten just half a length. Opulent was a gutsy fifth after being wide throughout and leading at the 200m until the eventual runner up passed her at the 100m. Illuminati worked hard to take the front and only succumbed at the 200m then would not lay down to be beaten just over three quarters of a length. Waikaha had every chance to the home turn but battled on okay for seventh with the next two home Locket and Meursault having some merit. Blue ‘N’ Gold was finding the line late. The stablemates Better Keeper and Cassie Anne were ridden upside down or too far back on settling. The former was too close on settling to produce her customary kick and is best ridden quieter while the latter got too far back to ever be any realistic chance. Czarista would be better in her correct grade while Slice Of Class was poor and worked too hard early. There was only six lengths from first to last in this event so lots of form will come out of it for future reference and with so many female only blacktype events each season it has even more significance.
