11th Coupland's Bakeries Mile (G2)

WT: 52kg Type: OPEN

The G2 mile was the feature event of the whole card and drew only a dozen runners surprisingly when usually a capacity or near full field is a given. The winner last year Addictive Habit scored by a head at 57kg and today won by a nose under 59.5kg. He was well enough in having captured a G1 at WFA three starts ago at 59kg. Today was his eleventh win from thirty-six starts and six of those have come at the mile. Bettors who backed this 6yo gelding would have torn their tickets up and made them into confetti when he was heavily under the whip and going nowhere and wide near the home turn. Under constant persuasion by rider Sam Spratt he just kept coming with every stroke and while still fifth at the 100m he had some momentum. Addictive Habit just beat Ringo on the line after it had cruised up third and coming at the 100m almost certain to win. Breaking Dawn after sitting second in gap from a tearaway leader looked like he would be another 40-1 or longer winner on the day when coming the closing stages. His fight was admirable as he was chasing the whole way and would not go away at any stage before ending up a very close third. Allez Eagle went clear in the lead and had a big buffer at the 200m only to shorten stride late and be swamped the final 25m. He had no attention for the front so may well have won if not let stride along so clear and especially so far from home. Platinum Witness ran up to be a threat at the 200m before finishing fifth beaten a length and a half only with some cut or cushion in the ground what she was likely missing. Nashville ran on late from well back as he always does. Mighty Solomon was a tad disappointing and hit a flat spot at the 200m but too his credit got going again the closing stages. Timy Tyler could have done with some cut in the ground but still ran okay all things considered. Overtheriver a next upper as only warming up late from the back and especially when you consider his best from comes when ridden closer to the action. Paraketo was not horrible considering he was woefully out of form prior while Superior Court was outclassed as was Saperavious. Addictive Habit gave them all weight and still won after looking 100-1 to even place at the 400m. He may just come back next year to attempt the hattrick. Ringo was good and he can win a Group race in New Zealand this season. Allez Eagle is suspect late in a mile but more so if he uses up too much energy early and across the top. He has a lot more wins in store but still needs to be rated if leading. Platinum Witness was not disgraced but needs a more yielding track and her stablemate Mighty Solomon can be given the benefit of the doubt too.
