N.Z. B'stock 43rd 1000 Guineas (G1)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

Risque was dominant in the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) and showed several qualities that will see her continue to clean up this season. The filly disputed the early pace but then was crowded and lost her place to end up worse than midfield the outer in a far from strong run race. When she was steered widest turning for home the response she gave once detonated at the 200m was impressive and in a flash took the lead at the 100m to win by a length and a quarter in 1:35.96. Strada Cavallo ran on well closer in for second after being tardy and settling back with a dream run through the inner a key turning for home. The pacemaker Dezzies Dream was the lone South Island trained runner and she gave a good kick early in the run home only to be gobbled up quickly at the 100m. She held onto third and gained a valuable G1 placing on her resume to embellish her worth as a broodmare and of course her bloodline. Special Memories was running on gamely for fourth and is a stablemate of the winner. Let Her Rip found the line late after not much went her way while Mime ran a better sixth than it can ever read after being crowded early. Mime then used up energy to speed up second the outer and while the pace was not strong she was still second at the 200m and fourth at the 100m. Trinity Hill the visitor from Australia ran on well from last closer in and found some traffic at times too. She has more wins in store. Princess Davone fought on for eighth and is also a stablemate of the winner. No More Tears and Serena Miss the two favourites finished ninth and tenth respectively with the former disappointing after getting a nice run the outer on settling. The latter can be forgiven totally being a big filly and finding slammed doors ahead not once but twice the run home. Maritimo may not have run the mile out while High Class needs a stronger clip and some rain on the day. Secret Spirit is a wet tracker through and through. Risque may well handle the boys too this season and is relaxing enough in her races now to get over middle distance. She can perform on wet footing too so has a fair few bases covered already with her third win in six starts today being a gold standard G1 ensuring her broodmare worth. Strada Cavallo ran on well but did take the short route and the same argument applies for Trinity Hill but both will be winning again this season at least once more. Let Her Rip was sound down the outside from the back and they just did not go fast enough overall for her to haul them in with more oomph. Special Memories was good and Mime even better considering she did more work in the running. Serena Miss can be forgiven and No More Tears deserves another chance as she is much better than today showed. Solid form reference for the future as this race almost always is and some of the fillies will progress to middle distance and then maybe a Derby and/or Oaks while others will come back in trip to be out and out sprinters.
