Canterbury Belle (LR)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This Listed 3yo filly 1200m saw an all the way winner in Miss Federer start second favourite and with the manmade track bias in play she never looked in any doubt. Seven of the ten winners on the day turned for home first, second, third or fourth and the furthest away was two lengths tellingly of them. The biggest margin made up all day was three lengths from the home turn to win. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were sixth (one-off the inside and a length and a half from the winner), third (two-off the inside and a length from the leader), second (one-off and two lengths from the leader), eleventh (five-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), third (one-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), seventh (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (on the rail and a length ahead), fourth (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and third (two-off the inside and a length from the leader). Miss Federer sped over to lead on the inside rail and slipped well clear halfway up the run home then held on grimly to score by a neck in 1:10.20. The time for the Open Handicap event held just before was 1:09.10 (or six lengths superior), which initially suggested Miss Federer was not too bad but the race that followed a Benchmark65 saw the winner clock 1:09.67, so her time was not that flash in comparison. Today was the fourth win in seven starts for Miss Federer and three of those have come at Blacktype (one at G3 and two at Listed level). Her only flop was when tried clockwise at Ellerslie and beaten over thirty-one lengths behind the gifted Probabeel. She may be just a sprinter only and time will tell but she still holds a nomination for the G1 2000 Guineas (1600m). All About raced fourth and was wide to the home turn but kept coming and got very close at the line. Woodcote Lass the favourite settled midfield and very wide but strode up closer turning in and tried hard after such an overlander. Live Drama at $31 ran on strongly the widest after being well back and wide on settling and her effort sums up the race ands result overall. Prior when fresh up she ran sixth behind Woodcote Lass and was beaten over eight lengths on heavy ground but on dead ground today she was just half a neck behinds that same rival. Eight lengths is an enormous margin to make up between two runners. Xplosion fought on fairly for fifth from not too far away on settling and may need further now while Sorceress from back and wide fought on after the overlander and she is s stablemate of the winner Take A Risk a maiden that has never finished top three started at $58 and raced fifth or sixth and ended up seventh at the line beaten less than four lengths but that may have been more due to manmade track bias. It is still telling she could finish not that far away in this field regards the actual race depth. Hot Tap from the rear trio on settling battled on okay late while Bronte Beach knuckled at the start and finished ninth after being second last turning or home. She is a total forgive. Intimidate at $12 was beaten almost eight lengths and the filly never seem to hit out properly on the better underfoot conditions. The rest got beaten ten lengths and more and either were outclassed or need wetter footing. This result has an asterisk due to the manmade track bias but also that many of these fillies are either not sprinters or are wet trackers only.
