Woburn Farm Tauranga Classic (LR)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

Then track was a bog at Tauranga and times were thirty lengths or more off standard and many horses known to swim finished a long way away at the line in several races. This Listed fillies and mares over 1400m drew the smallest field seen in many years for a blacktype race for this sex in the North Island with just seven runners starting. The leading stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman had three runners in the field and ended up getting the trifecta with New York Minute, Deals In Heels and Tomelilla. New York Minute was having her second run for the yard having been prepared in the Central Districts prior and the big strapping 5yo mare won first up for her stable by daylight on a bog at Trentham. She ran second in this race last year but today scored by three-quarters of a length in 1:28.68 after racing second the outer and talking the lead before the home turn. New York Minute was too big and too strong in the conditions to win her seventh race from twenty-three starts and she has at blacktype now raced seven times for one win and six placings. The win was just reward for the mare that may well come back next season early on at least when wet tracks still prevail and shoot for higher honours. Deals In Heels raced fourth then third wide before reaching second turning for home and fought well to the line. Sitting deep was not a negative at all the way the track raced today as several others either won or placed doing similar. Tomelilla trailed third the inner and fought on well for third just over a length and a half behind the winner. Art Deco kept coming to the line from fifth on settling and fought on well to miss third by just a nose, The second favourite and the winner of this last year easily in Underthemoonlight was last away and sat there until improving wide across the top and came up fourth and deepest runner turning in,. She hit a flat patch at the 200m then got her second wind and was coming well at the line to be just over two lengths from the winner. Odisha was over five lengths behind in sixth place (almost seven and a half lengths from the winner) after settling in the rear duo and she was not seasoned enough to cope in the ground at WFA. Rich Billie Marsh soon led as expected but she got headed before the home turn and stopped badly to be a distant last and thoroughly outclassed. This was a wet trackers race and the first five home all have more wins in store especially against their own sex. Odisha on better footing and under handicap conditions will show her true worth. Underthemoonlight on not as deep ground can eliminate that flat patch at a crucial time in her races if she does race on next season as a 7yo mare. New York Minute is such a big lass that WFA even against the lads should be in her wet track wheelhouse.
