This G1 mile for fillies and mares is the only of its type in New Zealand at the highest level and once again drew a worthy line up. The biggest asterisk will be the Te Aroha track that had an incredible bias towards leaders and the inside all day with the nine race card seeing six leaders win and two trailers. The one run on winner all day was Bonniegirl and she has scope but even more so now looking at the outrageous track bias that meant almost every runner in each race had no chance whatsoever. The winner Perfect Fit was tackling a mile for the first time and narrowly held on at the end to win by a neck in 1:35.36. The 4yo was wide on the pace working before taking the front at the 900m so was always going to be vulnerable late and it looked like track bias got her home in the end as she was out on her hooves near the line. It was her sixth win in eleven starts and she is compiling a super record as only once being out of the money and that was a fourth at G3. Abidewitheme was a staggering second after settling last on her own and then being drawn the widest runner in the homestraight on lanes nothing touched all day. She boomed home and would have won for sure but for the blatant track bias. The mare had come back from Australia and clearly found the depth easier. She had finished third in this race last year in a stronger field for depth overall and also drew wide then too. Soubrettes like the winner was having a first look at the mile and an argument could be made to say she should have won today rather than being third a neck and nose away. The mare copped a back check at the 800m and went from midfield back to twelfth then surged sharply as she can to reach second at the 200m. The fact she kept coming and the winner was tiring probably gave a slightly false impression but the fact remains the interference cost her several spots and well over a length plus momentum at the time. Emily Monk fought well for fourth and handled the class rise and WFA scale well. Ruud Not Too had every chance and fought on but the sixth and seventh finishers Rasa Lila and Candle In The Wind were eyecatching. Rasa Lila ran on well late from well back while Candle In The Wind made a big run incredibly wide across the top and sustained the effort until very late but had to wilt a tad. Girl of My Dreams and Consensus were disappointing considering they had been racing at G1 versus all comers of late and maybe they have come to end of their campaigns. Celebrity Miss was wide throughout so to be beaten just over five and a half lengths was commendable and she would like a more rain-affected track. Mary Quant worked too hard wide for the first half of the race to have anything left for the run home at her first try at G1 under WFA. Recite sadly had to be euthanized after faltering at the 700m and suffering a compound fracture of the pastern in her left foreleg. Perfect Fit has more wins in store for sure as she has tactical speed but she will need to run faster time at the mile and will not always be helped by such a savage track bias. She may well be just a sprinter that can get the mile in the right company. Abidewithme was stupendous and like a few in this the G1 Easter (1600m) under handicap conditions should be next on the agenda. Soubrettes and Emily Monk would be candidates as would Rasa Lila and Candle In The Wind though the handicapper could have the final say with one or two of these.
