Wellfield Desert Gold Stakes (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

The track at Trentham was worse than the Dead4 attributed in many places and looked patchy and very tired after four Saturdays in a row racing upon it. The times for 1400m -1600m on the day were massively sub-par and never ever use the chute times here (800m-1200m) as any guide whatsoever as they are not realistic and never have been. This G3 3yo filly mile was of reasonable depth and saw Nicoletta score narrowly from the favourite Devise and this pair proved over a length and a half superior at the line to the rest. Nicoletta was handy the inner on settling before being held up across the top only to get a run through at the 400m as almost every field saw riders steer away from iffy inside lanes and the rail was already out 3m. She drove though to lead at the 200m and won the race right then and there before Devise unleashed at her as the only realistic threat. The winning margin was a short head and the time a poor 1:37.46, the worst time on the day easily of five contests held at this distance. It was the second win in six starts by Nicoletta that runs in the lucky JML colours especially when it comes to fillies and it was her first blacktype success. Devise ran on like an Oaks filly for here in the Autumn and she too was in a good spot before losing her position across the top. The eyecatcher in third was Bonneval that was tardy and last away and ran home attractively from well back turning for home. She almost wins the race for sure with a proper getaway as drew gate two right alongside the eventual winner that jumped out well. Shared Secrets put some reality into the race and result being a maiden having just her third start and she came with a big finish down the outer for fourth. She too lost her place and went from midfield to the rear quartet before being drawn wide and let rip from twelfth at the 200m. McPhoebe was okay considering she was very wide early and restrained back to last then made a wide move across the top so to sustain it to some extent was admirable. Rube Bridges was the first filly home that raced in or near the lead early when a few had a look before being headed across the top only to dive through and lead at the 400m closer in. If she had done less work early then may have been in the finish and was still third at the 100m before being swamped. Whipped ran on closer in okay like a stayer and is out of a Zabeel dam. Galloping Gerte was not too bad as she was handy then lost position before fighting on while Princess Sapphire was the next on speed runner home. She moved from midfield to challenge for the lead after 400m and took the font across the top before being steered several widths away from the fence turning and was headed immediately. Princess Sapphire boxed on fairly and could be backed next time out if ridden less aggressively. Date Night was ordinary and may be best clockwise but deserves to be given the benefit of the doubt once. Rip Into Ghia once wide and eased back never got in the race and would be odds on back to her proper grade. Street Ranger and Dreams Of Paris were both asked a colossal lot of in the running so no surprise they punctured to be the last duo over the line. They both made very wide runs across the top from the back and the former got into fourth turning for home and the latter was deep at the 800m and up second turning for home. Each can be forgiven as moving that far from home and that wide is asking a bit much of inexperienced raceday fillies and one lost a hind plate and the other had a hind leg laceration. There looks to be a few in this that will go onto the G1 NZ oaks on March 18, if they can get there in one piece, but the very motley track at Trentham glaringly shown up with poor times was the asterisk. This was a slow run race so the top two can go on with it and the run on duo for third and fourth have scope. Lot of winners from this to come but in lesser grades for sure.
