Tui-Backing Winners Anniv. (G3)

Type: OPEN

This G3 mile under set weights and penalties saw the only G1 winner in the race prevail in the 7yo gelding Wait A Sec. He had won at G1 under WFA over 2040m in October carrying 59kg and at G3 had just 58kg and was before today a five-time winner at 1550m to 1600m, so he was rather well in. Since last April he has won eight races so the opposition is getting worse clearly and this late maturer has found the highest levels in New Zealand suddenly within his range. He sat midfield the inner and got a sweet trip throughout plus got off near the home turn and strode through third at the 200m then reached second at the 100m. In a ding donger finish between three runners he got the bob in that matters to win by a nose in 1:367.60 and record his twelfth success from forty-three starts so he has been well tried for many years. Asama Blue, a two-win mare having just her eighth start, got just 5kg from the winner under these conditions missed winning by a flared nostril. The 5yo mare sat midfield the outer and really unleashed from sixth at the 200m a sustained surge. Tavimyfriend, a four-win gelding having his eighteenth start, had to carry 55kg so got just 3kg from the winner, a G1 victor in the Spring. He sat handy the outer and his rider moved turning for home to take the lead 350m out so went too soon clearly as he was beaten a nose and short head. Beefeater trailed the inner and was a tad disappointing fourth albeit close up as he had every conceivable chance. Kolonel Kev was sound after he dwelt a tad at the start and had to booted though early to sit fifth and he fought on well the run home. Skyweka was last away and ran on okay after settling back on the inner to be beaten just over two lengths. Slimline was a brave seventh after being trapped back and wide throughout and she was beaten just two and a half lengths. Shadow Fox sat second the outer and wilted a tad while Grazia was noticed running on from back and wide. Ladies First has been a wet tracker only so far but she was running on from last late. Stratocaster never really got into the race not did Seize The Moment, the runner up in this last year with 58kg and today had 56kg. Heavens Keep led up and stopped and now has had five runs at Group or Listed level for fails each time. Nicoletta the favourite settled back and dropped right out the run home to finish last beaten almost seventeen lengths and the mare was found to have suffered Cardiac Arrhythmia The finish was much like the other two Group races on the day with a nose between the first two in the G3 over 2100m then the first three home in the G1 3yo mile was a neck and a nose and this G3 mile saw a nose and a short head between the first three at the line. The winningest runner in the field won over the least successful runner and another low win record runner to make the form dubious indeed. Three lengths covered the first nine home so they were way too bunched to all be anything else but of similar ability and depth. Expect some form reversals out of this and on a day where just one leader won and it came in the opening event down the bionic chute over 1000m in a small field. The times for 1400m, 1600m and 2100m were below standard so you would think more leaders would have prevailed the closing 600m all day that were ordinary due to the footing. Summer time racing has nothing to do with dry track gallops meetings anymore, which seems an unusual place to reach for the sport that is up against so much more competition doing completely the opposite and using hot and fast as the selling focus.
