Castletown Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 2yo at set wet weights saw the first three home superior clearly and the quinella unsurprisingly was fillies, as female gallopers utterly dominate the Blacktype landscape of New Zealand. Flaunting won fresh up narrowly from two runners that had both won themselves prior fresh up and therefore had a race fitness core outing under their belts. The track at Wanganui was an absolute bog and they only just broke 1:20 for 1200m and 1:50 for a mile with almost every runner steered as wide as possible. Most of the fields broke apart completely anyway before the home turn and vast numbers were exhausted and in total reverse gear across the top even. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were second (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), second (twelve-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (sixteen off the inside and two lengths clear), fourth (sixteen-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (thirteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (nineteen-off the inside and a neck behind), fourth (eighteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (fifteen-off the inside and length and a half from the leader) and led (nineteen-off the inside and half a length from the leader). Flaunting settled down ninth and improved before the home turn to sixth angled wider and then the filly came through fourth at the 200m and reached second at the 100m,. She led soon after and won by a long head in 1:20.73 to record her second success from four starts and get her first piece of Blacktype. She's A Lady raced handy and went through into second before challenging across the top to then taking the lead nearing the home turn. She was joined turning in and got headed at the 250m and was third at the 100m but fought hard in the conditions to regain second at the 75m and tried ever so hard to the line. Two earlier outings chasing Blacktype had resulted in a distant Listed fourth and a G2 fifth, so today she got some reward and handled the testing wet footing well. Jager Bombed was the first male home and he raced third wide early then fifth wide before swimming up second near the home turn and then challenging for the lead as they turned for home. He led narrowly at the 250m and at the 100m before being headed at the 75m into third, which he fought hard thereafter and was just a long head and a head from the winner at the post. All About Magic, the South Island trained filly started a clear favourite, which tells you the depth of this line up was nothing out of the ordinary. She was last away then eighth wide across the top and turned for home seventh and deepest out turning for home. The filly kept coming to be fourth at the 100m but was two and a half lengths from the third finisher. Sai Fah moved up sixth wide across the top and reached third turning for home before weakening to finish fifth beaten just under seven lengths. Platinum Bordeaux and Second Slip both finished between seven and eight lengths from the winner then the rest came home miles away with Cinzento the leader stopping to finish eighth beaten over twenty lengths. Familia and Reliable Hunter both went across the line with Cinzento not separated by much and then the last finisher home Star Ellipse was beaten over fifty-two lengths. Star Ellipse it was found bled and now faces a mandatory three month stand down. This was pure wet track bog form so has no relevance bar being under similar atrocious and biased footing. The first three home may well all be better on footing that is not bottomless and All About Magic may be the best South Island juvenile but until they meet on fairer underfoot conditions this Listed result was purely summer and mudlark form.
