This Listed mile under WFA saw Dolcetto, which had not won a race since December of 2017, score narrowly in a tight finish that saw the first four over the line covered easily by a length. The track at Wanganui was an absolute bog and they only just broke 1:20 for 1200m and 1:50 for a mile with almost every runner steered as wide as possible. Most of the fields broke apart completely anyway before the home turn and vast numbers were exhausted and in total reverse gear across the top even. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were second (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), second (twelve-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (sixteen off the inside and two lengths clear), fourth (sixteen-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (thirteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (nineteen-off the inside and a neck behind), fourth (eighteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (fifteen-off the inside and length and a half from the leader) and led (nineteen-off the inside and half a length from the leader). Dolcetto raced a handy fourth then third and was still there with 200m to go before in a slogging finish taking the lead at the 100m then held on to score by a long neck in 1:49.82. He had almost forgotten how to win but got there today and has won nine of his twenty-eight starts and the rising 7yo now has a Listed success to go with a G3 victory. Rosewood second up almost prevailed after settling down tailed out last and then sweeping up fourth before the home turn. The rising 6yo mare was still fourth at the 200m and 100m then reached third at the 50m and she got second right on the line. Platinum Rapper highlighted the weakness of WFA depth when able to finish a very close third after being back and wide and then moved up to lead across the top. The 3yo filly with 55.5kg was in a ding donger at the 200m and once headed at the 100m fought very hard to the line. The fact she almost won a Blacktype event at WFA versus allcomers is very telling indeed. She's Poppy won this last year and after getting back was sixth wide across the top and then swept up into second before the home turn. She challenged turning in and was in a ding donger at the 200m before being headed at the 100m then fought tooth and nail to the line. The fifth finisher in this was Scapolo and he was over nine lengths from the fourth finisher across the line and the rest after that rising 10yo came home in gaps. Tomelilla finished last beaten over forty-eight lengths and the favourite Back In A Flash finished eighth beaten almost fourteen lengths. The footing was diabolical as many in this field can swim but the ground today was almost prehistoric. The form is irrelevant from the race bar for when they are running 1:50 for a Blacktype mile of all comers and that does not happen very often as it is wet track form only. This was swimmers and mudders form and a few in this field are old gallopers still going around sadly because nothing is coming through the ranks.
