Ryan Moore Rides The CliffsofMoher In Melbourne Cup

Ryan Moore has elected to ride The CliffsofMoher for owner Lloyd Williams and trainer Aidan O’Brien in next Tuesday’s $7 million Melbourne Cup.

The CliffsofMoher will be one of three O’Brien-trained runners in the Melbourne Cup. His other runners are the Williams-owned Yucatan (James McDonald) and Rostropovich.

Moore has enjoyed some notable wins on Williams-owned horses in the UK. He rode Order Of St George to wins in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup and G1 Irish St Leger in 2016.

Moore rode Rostropovich in last Saturday’s WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valey where the import set the pace before finishing fifth behind champion mare Winx.

He was never going to be his Melbourne Cup rider due to his light weight of 51kg.

The CliffsofMoher was ridden by Hugh Bowman when he opened his Australian campaign with a third in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20.

Bowman had made an earlier Melbourne Cup commitment to ride Marmelo for UK trainer Hughie Morrison.

The Caulfield Cup form, won by Melbourne Cup topweight Best Solution, looks strong this year but the race has not been the guide to the Melbourne Cup it once was.

It has been 10 years since a Melbourne Cup winner ran in the Caulfield Cup, the last being Viewed in 2008.

Yucatan is the ruling Melbourne Cup favourite after his dazzling win in the G2 Herbert Power Handicap over 2400m at Caulfield on October 13.

Moore, three times champion jockey in the UK, has ridden in five Melbourne Cups for one win on Protectionist in 2014.
