AFL: Top four clash on super Saturday

3 minute read

The top four are all in action on Saturday with ladder-leaders Geelong taking on Melbourne, while there is a big derby clash between Sydney and GWS to look forward to.

Geelong are setting the pace in the AFL this season when winning seven from seven, but their unbeaten record will be put to the test against the fourth-placed Demons.

The Cats are 5.00 to win the grand final and another victory over Melbourne will get the members believing their second premiership in three years could be on the way.

Saturday begins with the big derby clash between second-placed Sydney and GWS, who sit in third spot.

Both have started the season 6-1 but something will have to give on Saturday, in what is expected to be a fiery clash.

Meanwhile, St Kilda are also in action when they entertain North Melbourne, while seventh-placed Essendon head to the west to take on the Eagles.

GWS will relish SCG clash

. What: Sydney v Greater Western Sydney
. Where: SCG, Sydney
. When: 13:45 (AEST), Saturday 4th May 2024
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
. Odds: Sydney 1.82, Greater Western Sydney 2.00

Sydney have been scoring points for fun this season and head into the derby clash on the back of three straight wins after suffering a shock loss to Richmond.

The Giants returned to winning ways when blowing away Brisbane last weekend and a trip to the SCG will hold no fear for them.

GWS have won four of the past five meetings at the venue, including a dramatic one-point win in 2023.

It is likely to be another close encounter, and GWS can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

Must-win for St Kilda

. What: St Kilda v North Melbourne
. Where: Marvel Stadium, Melbourne
. When: 16:35 (AEST), Saturday 4th May 2024
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
. Odds: Brisbane Broncos 1.12, Sydney Roosters 6.25

St Kilda have made a sluggish 2-5 start to the season and are in danger of losing touch with the top eight at such an early stage.

Nothing other than four points will do against a North Melbourne side that have yet to taste victory this season.

The two sides have already met this season, with St Kilda winning the round one clash by just 19 points.

They will be hoping for a bigger winning margin on this occasion and are priced at 5.50 to win by 25-36 points.

Geelong set for Demons test

. What: Melbourne v Geelong
. Where: MCG, Melbourne
. When: 19:30 (AEST), Saturday 4th May 2024
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
. Odds: Melbourne 2.02, Geelong 1.80

Geelong passed a big test last weekend when over coming Carlton by 13 points, and they face another against Melbourne on Saturday.

Jeremy Cameron was in top form against Carlton when booting five goals and can be backed at 8.50 to kick the first of the game.

Melbourne have lost the last two games against the Cats, but both were at GMHBA Stadium, and they will relish being back at the MCG.

The Demons are priced at 6.00 to upset the form book and win by 1-12 points.

Reid back for Eagles

. What: West Coast v Essendon
. Where: Optus Stadium, Perth
. When: 20:10 (AEST), Saturday 4th May 2024
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
. Odds: West Coast 2.55, Essendon 1.52

West Coast will be boosted by the return of Harley Reid as they look to pick up their third home win on the bounce.

The young gun was rested for the defeat against the Gold Coast last week and will be out to return with a bang. He can be backed at 15.00 to kick the first goal.

Essendon came close to beating Collingwood on Anzac Day, but had to settle for a share of the points following a thrilling encounter.

They need a win to keep on track for a top-eight finish and are priced at 5.50 to win by 13-24 points.
