The Money Trail – Canterbury, July 5

3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Wednesday’s meeting at Canterbury.

Calculated (Race 1) is a dominant favourite at $1.95 having more than halved his opening price. The So You Think colt resumes for Chris Waller off two trial wins and the market move suggests much is expected first up.

Hammoon Dream (Race 2) has moved to the second line of betting at $4.20 after firming more than three points. The filly has won two of her past three runs in the country and although she failed here in between those she will appreciate the soft surface.

Soothing (Race 3) has almost halved her opening quote to take over as favourite at $2.30. The Godolphin filly by Lonhro makes her debut off a promising win in her latest barrier trial at Rosehill.

So Hard To Catch (Race 4) opened close to double figures but good support has seen her price tumble more than six points to $3.10 and is now the favourite. The filly showed promise at her maiden campaign and should be ready to fire fresh off two trial wins.

Obsidian (Race 6) is now the clear market elect at $4.60 having tightened four points in early betting. He should find this easier than his two runs so far this campaign and should be peaking third up and out to this trip.

Bolero King (Race 7) has been backed into favouritism at $3.90, more than a point shorter than his opening price. He has won three of his last four runs including when resuming at Gosford last start so can progress second up.

Peter and Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old filly Cudabeen followed her first up win in a Benchmark 65 (1000m) at Kembla on 10 June with another good win here. She was smartly away from her outside barrier (9) and soon crossed to the lead. She then settled well, drifted a bit deep in the home straight but still fought back nicely under Hugh Bowman to win well.
