Team Hawkes-trained colt Irukandji staged a very good effort in breaking through in this Group race for his first win in four starts. He was tapped deep from his difficult barrier (11), was seventh early on before progressing to cross to the lead at the 700m. He then settled well before lifting gamely when challenged in the straight, fighting back to score by a half-length in a really smart effort. Aristocratic Miss settled back in second last place from her outside barrier (15), went widest of all from the 300m and kept running on very well for second, her wide draw proving costly. The favourite Spin had a nice trip in seventh place, between runners, improved (wide with cover) from the 600m, looked dangerous when he challenged at the 200m and then fought on for third.
