Dual Group 1-winning sprinter Vega Magic scored a most impressive first-up win. He soon drove though on the inner to retain the lead and then appeared to travel a bit keenly, racing in blinkers for the first time. He grabbed a good break on turning for home and was untroubled from that point to score very easily. Second favourite Voodoo Lad settled in last place in the six-horse field, improved on straightening and kept running on really well for second, without looking likely to trouble the winner. It was a smart effort, nevertheless. Jungle Edge raced outside the leader and eventual winner and held on quite well for third. Black Heart Bart was fifth and second-last to the 600m, was shuffled back to last at the home turn and made late ground for (5.6 lengths) fourth in a sound first-up effort.
