David Payne-trained colt Tarka advanced quickly in class after two recent Warwick Farm midweek wins to take out this Group 2 race, giving him three wins in succession from five starts. He settled in fifth place on the rails from his inside barrier (1), improved (under riding) rounding the home turn, switched out to challenge nearing the 100m and battled on strongly to score in a close photo finish. He is a promising colt who should appreciate further. Dealmaker was eased at the start and remained in last place in the nine-horse field before improving only the rails on straightening. He got a split and took a narrow lead at the 100m and then fought gamely for a very close second, staging a smart effort. Talented colt The Autumn Sun was ridden quietly and settled seventh place on the rails. He looked for a run between horses on straightening, eventually got clear coming to the 100m and then made late ground for an unlucky third, his first defeat in four starts. Irukandji raced in second last place, improved (wide) from the 600m and kept running on well for (2.9 lengths) fourth, staging a nice effort.
