The Aidan O'Brien-trained Yucatan staged an outstanding effort in winning here at his Australian debut. He settled second last from his outside barrier (15) before soon commencing to improve (wide) to be third (three deep) at the 1200m. He dashed to the front coming to the home turn, established a huge lead by the time he reached the 200m and was then eased down by James McDonald to score effortlessly at the post by a length and a half. Brimham Rocks raced in eighth place, improved nicely (deep) from the 600m, went to distant second at the 200m and then kept battling on gamely for second, his fifth placing in as many starts this preparation. A Prince Of Arran raced in 12th place, on the rails, improved (between runners) coming to the home turn and kept running on solidly for third in a promising effort at his first Australian start.
