Japanese-bred import Brave Smash, a winner of the Caulfield Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in February, scored his second Group 1 success in 28 starts in winning here. Returning to racing in blinkers, he settled in seventh place (wide with cover) behind a quick tempo before improving nearing the home turn, moved up well on straightening, hit the front at the 100m and finished best to score well. Aidan O'Brien-trained Spirit Of Valor followed his good second at his Australian debut in the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 13 with another bold effort here. He was smartly away from his outside barrier (14), settled in fourth place (trapped deep), moved up well coming to the home turn, took the lead on straightening and was only to be caught nearing the post to finish second, staging a very good effort. Kementari was eased from a wide barrier, settled in second last place in the 14-horse field, went widest of all rounding the home turn and ran on gamely to grab third in a very good performance. Spright settled just beyond midfield (wide with cover), made a wide move coming to the home turn and ran on in good style for (0.8 lengths) fourth. Invincible Star was quickly away and went to the front. She was then pressured in the early stages (going at a quick tempo) and then held on well under the circumstances for a good fifth, beaten a length. Houtzen had a good trip in fourth place on the rails, looked for a split on turning for home but was cut out in the closing stages to finish (1.7 lengths) sixth. The favourite Sunlight settled in fifth place (between runners), was shuffled back at the home turn and the battled on in restricted room for (3.2 lengths) seventh.
