A surprise win here by the Robbie Laing-trained colt Stars Of Carrum, his first win in eight starts, saw him suddenly come into calculations for the upcoming Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). He settled back on ninth place (on the rails), tracking a solid tempo, saved ground closer to the inner at the home turn, went to second on straightening and ran on resolutely to score a last stride win, appreciating the step up in distance here. Savoie raced in second place, tracking the leader (Cloak) who was setting a good pace. He went to the front approaching the home turn, looked the winner when he got a break on straightening, only to be caught on the post for the closest of seconds. Godolphin's Aramayo raced in tenth place, tracked up (wide with cover) from the 700m, went very wide rounding the home turn and kept running on well in the centre of the track to take third. Savvy Oak raced near the tail of the 13-horse field, improved (between runners) at the home turn and battled on nicely for (3.3 lengths) fourth while Mickey Blue Eyes made late ground, without threatening, to finish (4.6 lengths) fifth.
