After a long string of placings, Durendal finally cashed a winner's cheque with an overdue success, his eighth and second stakes. He sat a length back of the leader, one out, to the 400m, challenged once into the straight and took over at the 200m. Jockey Shaun McGruddy kept him up to his work and he gradually edged away to be a half length in front at the post. Belter led to the last corner, hugged the fence into the straight and when caught by the winner at the 200m kept fighting on for a solid second. Scales Of Justice lay third (rails) into the straight but couldn't catch the first two in the run home. Dainty Tess left her usual finishing burst too late this time, flashing into fourth when the race was all over.
