Eclipse Stakes (G3)

WT: 54.0kg Type: OPEN

Godolphin-raced stayer Tally, having his fifth run this preparation, scored a narrow but good win here, his first success since taking out the Japan Racing Association Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick in April. He settled nicely in fifth place, on the rails, behind a steady pace before Craig Williams switched in deeper and into clear running at the 300m. He then kept running on well, coming with a late surge to grab a last-stride victory. The $21 chance He Ekscels went to the front and travelled along at a moderate tempo. He picked up the pace from the 600m and kept fighting back well, only being caught at the post for a very close second after running a bold race. Muraaqeb raced outside the leader, challenged coming to the 300m and kept fighting on for a close third. The favourite Bring Me Roses raced back in seventh place, one off the rails, commenced a move coming to the home turn but failed to make ground in the sprint home for (2.2 lengths) eighth being unsuited by the slow early pace.
