Godolphin's talented British-bred stayer Avilius is now the winner of eight of his last 11 starts and followed up his victory in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) here on March 23 to clinch a second Group 1 win here. He settled well in seventh place, between runners, tracked up (deep) from the 600m, swept to the front approaching the 200m and then drew away to win easily, running the 2400m out strongly. Kris Lees-trained, Irish-bred Big Duke raced back in tenth place, on the rails, improved (between runners) from the 600m, went to third at the 200m and kept battling on well for second. New Zealand-trained mare Rondinella settled in fifth place, moved up nicely from the 600m, hit the front on straightening and then battled gamely for a good third at her first Australian start. German-bred stayer Sound, who was having his fourth Australian starts, raced in sixth place (on the rails), was shuffled back coming to the home turn, went deeper on turning for home and kept making ground for (6 lengths) fourth.
