Gwenda Markwell-trained three-year-old gelding Angel Of Truth suddenly emerged as a contender for the upcoming ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) after taking out this Group 3 race in good style. A winner of three at Kembla Grange from six prior runs, he went to the front and set quite a reasonable tempo in the heavy 10 conditions, beating off challengers nearing the home turn. He held a nice break at the 200m and then went to the post well to score by two lengths in a solid effort. The favourite Madison County raced in second last place in the nine-horse field, looking a threat when he moved up strongly (wide out) from the 200m, and he kept fighting well for second. Cossetot had a good trip in fourth place, challenged coming to the 200m and fought on for third with Carif making late ground for (3.8 lengths) fourth after being last to the home turn. New Zealand raider In A Twinkling was wide early on before settling in third place. He then moved up well coming to the home, but battled after his early efforts over the latter stages for (4.6 lengths) fifth on his Australian debut.
