Promising Peter and Paul Snowden-trained gelding Military Zone is now the winner of four of his eight starts. Having his second run back after winning the Gosford Guineas (Listed, 1200m) in December, he settled in fifth place (one off the rails), improved rounding the home turn, hit the front at the 100m and then fought back to score a narrow, but good, win. Trope was slow to move, raced near the tail of the nine-horse field before improving (deep) coming to the home turn. He then continued to make good ground in the straight, getting to within a head of the winner for second, staging a smart effort. Quackerjack began well and raced in third place to the home turn. He got to the front halfway down the straight and then battled on well to take the minor placing. Ranier was back in ninth place to the home turn, got between runners on straightening and kept battling on quite well for (4.4 lengths) fourth. The favourite Kylease went to the front, was able to set a reasonable tempo in the mid-stages but weakened from the 200m to finish last, perhaps being tested by the increase in distance and class here.
