Racing Preview : Canberra - Friday, 24th May 2019

3 minute read

The track has come up a Soft 6 with the rail out 8m the entire circuit. The club will be very happy with acceptances; with large competitive fields.

Race 1

At least four are capable of leading and they will run along. It’s very open with a number of winning chances. TYCOON TILY (11) is ex Team Hayes and was back to form winning the Maiden by a space at the Sapphire Coast over 900m. Ran a strong figure for this and punting she will see out the extra trip sitting at the bottom of the weights. FLORA BEL (7) won the Maiden well second-up at Wagga on the heavy and is much improved. She needs to replicate that on a dryer surface but expect her to keep improving. SHIPWAY (3) is also a second-up Maiden winner and impressed. He also looks a genuine chance. He’s Elusive (1) presents off a Newcastle Maiden win and surprised in that. The ex Hong Kong galloper is considerably improved and has to be considered. BET: Taking the punt on Tycoon Tily at each way odds.

Race 2

Expect them to run along. STAR OF THE CLAN (1) missed a length resuming here on the slow in much stronger and then was expected to win on the heavy at Wagga and was caught wide. Has had three weeks to get over that and a dryer surface will suit. Finds easier with a handy claim and just needs a good ride from the tricky gate to take beating. SUNEEZE (2) also draws out but there was a lot to like about the 1L defeat here second-up and expect her to be further improved. NO WHAT TO KEEP (11) will use the low gate and can surprise. The Maiden win here was comfortable and had to do a little two much at Wagga after the slow off. INVINCIBLE DREAM (7) and SERGEANT SAM (5) resuming and also deserve consideration. BET: With Star Of The Clan who should be ready to find her best.

Race 3

Half the field are debutants and it’s hard to say how they will settle. VELVET AEROPLANE (1) placed on debut when expected to win and then was favourite again resuming at Wagga and just went under after being slow away and wide. Gets the rail and the in-form McDougal and can make amends. TEJORI (12) debuts off a 4L Canberra trial win. Looks to have plenty of ability and expect her to be right in it with a good ride from the tricky gate. SECRET WORK (5) draws even wider but looks primed for the debut following a Hawkesbury trial win. She’s also likely to exhibit early speed and has to be considered. MANDALONG SERA (2) impressed first up at the provincials and then blew the start by 5L at Warwick Farm. Gets the claim and should be right in it if she goes with them. BET: Velvet Aeroplane looks the one to be with. The market generally, will be interesting.

Race 4

Discombe will lead and there are a number of others capable of taking a sit. DISCOMBE (1) had trialled well and then led on debut at Kembla Grange and ran out of puff at the 200m. The well-bred galloper is sure to have taken good improvement and gets his chance. WORDLESS (3) debuts off a trial win this venue and the blinkers are applied. He should find a good spot in the run and expect a bold run for the leading local yard. WITHORN (14) ran his best race resuming at Wagga beaten a lip and then was slow away on the heavy at Wagga and best to forget. She will use the low draw and has the figures to go close. SUGAR PINE (2) and MANDALONG ONE UP (11) also deserve consideration. BET: Discombe will be hard to beat on what we've seen.

Race 5

Alpine King can lead from Contaminated and Mandalong Tapit. A few chances. METRALLA (10) returned an improved galloper placing here behind Wyendra and spiked the figures again winning the CL1 at the same venue. He should find a good spot in the run and no surprise if he goes on with it for the in-form Gardner yard. MISS FARLOO (14) hasn’t won for a long while but improved out of sight for the new yard when she was just pipped here 16 days ago. Gets McDougal for the apprentice and she looks well placed to go one better sitting at the bottom of the weights. MANDALONG TAPIT (1) raced handy and made good improvement at Goulburn in a bit stronger. He will use the rail and expect him to make the finish. CONTAMINATED (7) draws out but is a Nick Olive improver who should be around the mark. BET: With Metralla each way.

Race 6

Pinetti will be prominent from the jump. ELABORATE (6) draws to box seat and couldn’t have been more impressive winning the Maiden by a space at Kembla Grange. He has been threatening and looks well-capable of repeating. ZARAFAH (12) won that race finding the right slot after a slow start. Ran favourite and has to be considered again despite the likelihood of a dryer track. PINETTI (5) is racing well but he’s drawn the carpark and will need a McDougal special. HILLTOP HOOD (4) is a chance with a good ride and no surprise to see PERFECT RHYME (9) improve quickly. BET: With Elaborate.

Race 7

Bart, Shangani Patrol and Jeddah Aheadah will all race handy. This is a very open contest. JEDDAH AHEADAH (11) finds harder and but no knock on his form and figures. Won heavily backed here the latest and was tough winning on the slow and brought good form to that. She will push forward and gets the 3kg weight drop. PARLIAMENT (8) can take a sit today from the low gate and seeks the hat-trick up from the mile. Has been doing it well and punting he will see it out. GARROS (3) missed a nose here in the Federal 16 days ago coming hard. A better track won’t bother and expect the middle distance to suit. VERTEX (10) and BART (2) also deserve consideration. BET: A throw at the stumps with Jeddah Aheadah each way.

Race 8

Exaggerate and Dangerous Breeding both cross over and may be the ones to run them along. PRINCE JACKO (12) just missed at Randwick and then was trapped wide with a big impost when not beaten far at Goulburn. Gets the weight drop today and is a genuine hope. DANSU (1) peaks and will use the rail. He was outgraded last start at Canterbury, but the Nowra win prior reads well. He’s a chance despite the weight impost. TERRITORIAL (4) needs to be kept very safe resuming and note has come up the early favourite. DANGEROUS BREEDING (11) is certainly going well enough to make the finish again. BET: Leaning to Prince Jacko.
