Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian metropolitan meetings for January 9.

Flemington: Race 7 @ 6.00pm
RIDING THE WAVE (7) has to stretch it out to 1400m now but suspect that he will cope. Looks really dangerous off the minimum against these off a good win last time. Won by just about the narrowest margin possible but the time was good and the form should hold up. VASSILATOR (3) was a winner last time and no shock to see him go on with that. Good talent when he is up and going. The best of BLAZEJOWSKI (1) would be competitive and latest was solid alongside BRAVE SONG (2). Both should run well here up to 1400m. SELECTION: #7 Riding The Wave looks to have the talent to follow up here.

Randwick: Race 2 @ 1.50pm
PINNACLE PRINCE (4) couldn't have been more impressive in his return when storming home to win easily at this track over 1100m. Returned decent figures there and the sectionals suggest he has more to offer. Drawn to get all the favours and should relish the step up in trip. Clearly the one to beat. JOEY'S CHANCE (8) closed off very well at Newcastle last start and has to be kept safe racing on the fresh side (39 days). Is likely to get back from the draw, but should be very strong late. TORO TORO (3) should be at his top now racing third up and gets in well after the claim. Handles all conditions and has to be included in the main chances. SELECTION: #4 Very keen on Pinnacle Prince.

Murray Bridge: Race 3 @ 2.16pm (AEDT)
HERE COMES LENNI (1) will get a lovely run again today. He took advantage of that two weeks ago at the mile. Can't see the added furlong being any hurdle to him in this. MAGNETIC EDGE (6) has been around the money all his recent outings. He just has to run this out. MEADOWS YOUNG BUCK (7) chases three on the bounce. He will be taking it up and clearly loves this type of distance. ROSELLI STING (4) can be a bit hit and miss. He has the blinkers off now. JACK'S A CRACKER (5) is racing well but in easier. Big drop in the weights as well. SELECTION: #1 Here Comes Lenni easy to like.

Gold Coast: Race 9 @ 6.25pm (AEDT)
ROMAN AUREUS (14) progressed off a solid resuming effort to find the line well for second over this trip at Eagle Farm last time. Won his only previous visit to this course and can peak third up. PROMETHEUS (3) settled last but ran on when fifth in the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes at Doomben. Had won three in a row before that including his resuming run here two back. Must respect. SPLENDORONTHEGRASS (15) has returned in good order winning two of three runs this time in. At her peak and is a definite chance again. AWESOME PLUCK (8) is working up to a win and gave a good sight when placed last start. SELECTION: #14 Roman Aureus for the win third up.

Ascot: Race 6 @ 8.55pm (AEDT)

SOLAIA (8) appreciated a drop in class and won comfortably in a similar grade last time. Drawn to get a perfect run and clearly the one to beat. LAST OF THE LINE (7) is a smart type resuming and while drawn wide can push up onto the speed. Trialling well and the major threat. RED PUBLISHER (1) was back to his best with a solid second here last time and comes into contention again. SASSY TRADER (9) and AGENT JAY (3) are genuine hopes too. SELECTION: #8 Solaia for the win.
