ROSEHILL January 4

Inside Grass; Good 4

A strong set of trials run under good conditions. Plenty of interest in the 2YO heats with eyes peeled for likely autumn prospects.

SILENT IMPACT (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): No doubt this classy 3YO is ready to make an impact when he starts his autumn campaign. He was a standout trial winner in late November and while the gap between trials raises some questions he again showed his quality to win the fastest of the three 1030m heats with plenty in hand (61.31; 34.84). Always in control and liked the way he worked well within himself while his rivals were under pressure.

STAR CHERIE (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): First trial since August for this flying Star Witness mare who has won three of her six starts up to 1100m. Commanded attention speeding to the fastest 900m heat win of the morning (52.86; 33.75), sprinting quickly over the last 600m to win by more than six lengths. Note that only one other 900m heat winner in 12 trials went under 53 seconds.

METALLICITY (Peter & Paul Snowden): Another hot trial from this impressive Zoustar colt, confirming the talent he displayed in his debut trial win at Canterbury on December 21. Settled kindly a couple of lengths of the leaders before getting into his work over the last 200m to easily round them up and run to the line powerfully under a quiet ride from Sam Clipperton, posting the fastest 900m heat win (53.56; 34.79) among the four 2YO trials. He's an imposing individual and obviously packs the talent to match his looks.

PYROIS (Hawkes Racing). This million dollar Written Tycoon colt was having his first trial and showed a lot of quality to track three wide from the back half and work to the line under no pressure from Tommy Berry to win his 900m heat. His time (54.47; 35.04) didn't compare to the heat won by Metallacity but suggest he holds plenty of scope for improvement off this experience.
