Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney barrier trials at Randwick ion April 20.
RANDWICK April 20
Randwick A Grass; Good 4
14 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 8 x 1050m (4 Open; 2 2YO; 2 Maiden); 5 x 740m (3 2YO; 1 Open; 1 Maiden)
With the autumn carnival winding down trainers are building up their winter stocks with an eye to Brisbane. Hence we are seeing a number of emerging talents preparing for their winter campaigns.
A case in point is the brilliant unraced filly SATIN RIBBONS, the daughter of Capitalist and Satin Shoes – that's a Golden Slipper winner over a Silver Slipper winner - who made a huge impression recording two big trial wins in January.
She inexplicably missed the autumn – no mishap as the stable says she needed time to develop - and the patient approach has obviously benefitted the filly as she has filled out and is now a very robust individual.
SATIN RIBBONS again showed her outstanding natural talent – reminiscent of what we saw from the ill-fated filly Amelia's Dream in her early days – in her return trial over 740m, jumping brilliantly and opening up a big lead in the first 200m under a tight hold from James McDonald. She led by seven lengths turning for home and was never asked for a serious effort yet put the fastest time of the morning on the board (42.96; 33.06) as she cruised to the line.

Her debut will be highly anticipated but so will the first start of BELLA ROUGE, an I Am Invincible filly in the Chris Waller stable who also showed she has the right stuff driving to the line for a strong win in her first trial.
Also ridden by McDonald, she was five lengths off the lead inside the last 200m before showing real class to surge home and win the trial with plenty in hand. Her overall time didn't match SATIN RIBBONS (43.66) but she posted a quicker last 600m (32.93).
I would also respect the prospects of PIZARRO, an unraced All Too Hard colt from the John O'Shea yard who won the third 740m trial for the 2YOs. He worked well within himself and while not as visually impressive as the fillies he is a strong colt who put a good time on the board (43.49; 33.23).
The 2YO heat times were much quicker than the only open trial over 740m where the winner NEWSREADER recorded a pedestrian 44.02 (33.80). He won under a hold in a bunched finish with MISS FOX and INANUP also working to the line with plenty to offer.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have some good winter prospects in LA FORET and EMBRACER. They recorded impressive open heat wins over 1050m and it will be no surprise to see both find their way to Brisbane.
LA FORET tracked the leader and extended easily when called on for a soft 1.5 lengths win in the good time of 62.56 (34.05) before EMBRACER bettered her time with an impressive 3.8 lengths win in the fastest 1050m heat (62.43; 33.95). The other 1050m open heats were won by in good style by the accomplished sprinter SOUTHERN LAD (62.66; 34.11) and the lightly raced 3YO FALCON (63.51; 34.17).

The fastest 2YO heat over 1050m was won by another unraced Snowden youngster KING HIGH (62.55; 34.65) by an impressive five lengths. They have given him plenty of time to find his legs - it was his first trial win at his fifth attempt!
