Trial Watch Reviews : 17th April - 21st April 2020

3 minute read

Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Warwick Farm (August 17), Rosehill (April 20), Newcastle (April 20) and Randwick (April 21).

RANDWICK April 21

Randwick A Grass; Good 4

14 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 6 x 1045m (2 Open; 2 2YO; 2 Maiden); 7 x 736m (1 Open; 1 3YO; 1 Maiden; 4 2YO)

A rare good track at Randwick for this set. No Group horses of note but the Waterhouse/Bott, Snowden and O'Shea stables had a number of pleasing triallers among their restricted grade horses and 2YOs.

Snitzel filly SHUMAAWEKH has better trial form than she has shown in her first two unplaced starts. She again looked more than capable with the way she cruised away from her maiden rivals in her 1045m heat to score by a soft 3.3 lengths with more in hand.

Other sharp heat winners included LILLEMOR, SANCY, WILD RULER, HOOPLA, ALURA and EXPLOSVE TRUTH. Eye catchers among the placegetters included SAMIAM SEUSSIE, LION'S ROAR, DARLING DIAMOND, NEWSREADER, ACROPHOBIC and INTREPIDACIOUS.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Shuwaamekh

X Lillemor; Faretti; Southern Lad; Sancy; Samiam Seussie; Wild Ruler; Lion's Roar; Sybella; Premier Rose; Tepario; Hoopla; Darling Diamond; Newsreader; Alura; Our Lancette; Acrophobic; Fiteuse; Intrepidacious; Explosive Truth; Lost And Running.

ROSEHILL April 20

Inside Grass; Soft 5

10 Heats – 3 x 1030m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 7 x 900m (1 Open; 4 2YO; 1 3YO; 1 Maiden)

VELORUM (Team Hawkes): Not A Single Doubt youngster showed he had come on strongly from his first trial when placed at Randwick to dominate his 900m heat (54.50; 34.90) with a stylish front running win, going to the line with plenty in hand.

DIS DAH WUN (Team Hawkes): This Dissident filly is ready to win her maiden after cruising through her 900m heat for a soft win in 54.79 (34.40), a time she could have easily improved on. Has taken obvious benefit from her first start placing at Gosford.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Velorum; Dis Dah Wun

X Greek Hero; Tangled; Tawaret; Snow Valley; Little White Lies; Onedayclosertoyou; September Run; Lucky To Win; Rogue Rocker; Head Legislator; Nuclear Summit; Atlantic King; Irish Angel.

NEWCASTLE April 20

Beaumont Grass; Good 4

14 Heats – 2 x 1200m (2 Open); 4 x 1000m (2 Open; 2 Maiden); 8 x 800m (2 Open; 4 2YO; 2 Maiden)

Kim Waugh and Kris Lees would have been in a happy place after this set of trials. Waugh won three heats and Lees sent out four winners.

Waugh's trio of winners HOLY REIGN, KNIGHT and the unraced RALPH'S FOLLY all recorded strong wins, showing more than enough to be confident about their chances when produced. Waugh also has a nice type worth following in the Japanese bred DEVELOPED.

Lees – as in the norm when they trial at Newcastle -  had a big team of runners with the former Victorian mare BIG SUZIE making an impression with her easy 1000m heat win; impressive efforts by his 2YO heat winners MEADOW LAND and MARRIED TO THE MOB; and promising placings from KEDAH and PERFECT RADIANCE all going into the blackbook.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Holy Reign; Ralph's Folly; Meadow Land

X Big Suzie; Knight; Developed; Rambler Rebel; Kedah; Salina Dreaming; Two Up; Married To The Mob;  Perfect Radiance; The Spell; Pure Rubick.

WARWICK FARM April 17

A Grass; Soft 6

19 Heats – 3 x 1200m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 6 x 806m (3 Open; 3 2YO); 6 x 802m (2 Open; 4 2YO); 4 x 798m (4 Maiden)

KYLEASE (Joseph Pride): There are few quicker mares over the short courses in Sydney. She was too sharp for her rivals by 4.5 lengths in the fastest of the 806m heats (47.16; 33.40), this being her second trial win since returning to work. She is ready for the right race first-up.

ANDERS (Ciaron Maher/Andrew Eustace): Not A Single Doubt youngster didn't live up to expectations early in the season but this trial, his third since resuming, underlines that he has the talent to win races. Tracked very wide throughout under a big hold from James McDonald in his 802m heat in 47.77 (34.10) with plenty in reserve.

FROSTY ROCKS (Bjorn Baker): Strong winner of his 798m heat in easily the fastest time (47.04; 33.60). Placed three of his five starts and a maiden looks his for the taking this prep.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Kylease; Anders; Frosty Rocks

X Miss Einstein; Sanctioned; Bold And Wild; Freehearted; Irukandji; Lashes; Redouble; Amusez Moi; Mollycoddle; Still Reigning; Equation; Ballistic Moon; My My My; Testing Times; Brazen Gem; Texas Forever; Torrid; Dulcero.
