Trial Watch Reviews : 24th July - 28th July 2020

3 minute read

Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney barrier trials at Warwick Farm on July 24 and Randwick on July 28.

RANDWICK July 28

Synthetic Track

17 Heats – 7 x 1080m (3 Open; 3 2YO; 1 Maiden); 10 x 780m (6 2YO; 2 Open; 1 3YO; 1 Maiden)

These trials went ahead after a transfer to the synthetic track due to the bad weather and very heavy grass tracks. However three heats for Group and Listed horses have been held over for three days to July 31 on the Kensington track.

This was a day out for the Snowden team with the biggest Randwick stable sending out nine of the 17 heat winners and also providing numerous placegetters. Their runners included a big number of talented rising 3YOs plus several well performed older horses showing they are in the right form to give the stable a strong kick to the new season.

The Snowdens younger brigade to impress included DAME GISELLE, AIM, RULERSHIP and STRIKE while their older heat winners included CREATOR, MISSILE MANTRA SIGNORE FOX, SANGRIA and the promising maiden OOJOOBA.

Other top stables also sent out some impressive winners with the best of them being the good 2YO winner ANDERS from the Maher/Eustace yard, Mark Newnham's ZANZIDANCE and the Waterhouse/Bott youngster KAAKIT AKIT.

The maiden filly OOJOOBA set the time standard for the 1080m heats, doing it easily to record a flat 63 seconds (34.33) for a soft 1.8 lengths win over stablemate REIGNITE. She should be winning in the near future.

RULERSHIP recorded the fastest time among the 2YO winners over 1080m (63.07; 34.24) while Ramornie Handicap winner SIGNORE FOX (63.14;33.46) and MISSILE MANTRA (63.46;33.87) must be followed on the form they displayed in their heat wins.

The 2YO filly ZANZIDANCE set the standard in the 780m heats with a slick win in 44.52 (32.59) over another good type in FORBIDDEN LOVE.

Another Newnham runner, the above average 3YO BIG PARADE, was the only other winner to break 45 seconds in the 780m heats (44.64;32.71) but the big winners SANGRIA (45.36; 33.08) and ANDERS 45.70; 32.,94) won under double wraps and could have gone much quicker if asked for serious efforts.

Classy youngsters DAME GISELLE (45.56; 33.44), KAAKIT AKIT (45.14; 33.06), STRIKE (45.45; 33.64) and AIM (46.09; 33.44) did as much as required to win their heats.

WARWICK FARM July 24

Course Proper/Inside Grass; Soft 7

15 Heats – Course Proper - 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); Inside Grass – 3 x 1200m (1 Open; 2 Maiden); 5 x 794m (2 Open; 3 2YO); 6 x 791m (3 2YO; 2 3YO; 1 Maiden)

MALKOVICH (Bjorn Baker): This Choisir colt could be a rising star for his stable next season. Seen only once at the races when sixth in the Golden Gift last November, he is unbeaten in three trials and this effort underlined his potential as he cleared out to score by six lengths in his 794m heat in the fastest time (45.59; 32.85) of all the 11 short distance heats over 794m and 791m. His closing sectionals were excellent in the soft conditions.

EVERY ROSE (Mark Newnham): Gimcrack Stakes winner did not come up in the autumn but looks back on track for a good spring campaign after winning her 791m heat in fast time (46.67;33.53). It was good to see her settle behind the leader before reeling in a good type in PRINCESS GLAMOUR under a quiet ride from Rachel King. The margin wasn't big but she went to the line with plenty in hand.
