The Hawkes stable is never short on talent and these trials underlined that there is plenty of unexposed potential in their current team. The stable won three heats with young types certain to win races and they had several other promising runners take the eye.

The standout had to be the unraced Darci Brahma 3YO gelding IBARAKI. Debut trials don't come much better as this well-educated sweet mover was a class above his maiden rivals winning his 900m heat unextended by 2.8 lengths in fast time (53.76; 34.65).

Team Hawkes also won two of the three 2YO trials over 900m with the imposing grey KOOLED (55.01; 35.15) and REMARQUE (54.08; 34.53), a natural runner who won the fastest of the three juvenile heats and is ready to perform on debut. KOOLED's heat time was slow but he is big striding youngster impressed with his late acceleration and surging drive through the line. He is a replica for his US sire Frosted and his pedigree suggests he will be a big improver with race experience.

Other members of the Hawkes team to make an impression were the placegetters VANDOULA LASS, SHAIK and VELORUM the highly regarded maiden KAPTIVE, who had a very easy time in his first trial since he was beaten as an odds on favourite on debut in July.

Another standout winner was the Matt Dunn-trained QUATUM, successful in his first start at Warwick Farm in July before two defeats. He was in another postcode winning the fastest 900m heat of the morning (53.58; 34.05) by seven lengths after leading by ten in the middle stages and did it with plenty in hand.

The Snowden stable also had some pleasing results with strong heat wins by AIM and MURA MURA.

CANTERBURY December 15

Course Proper; Soft 7

16 Heats – 3 x 1100m (1 Open; 2 C1/Maiden); 5 x 900m (5 2YO); 5 x 895m (3 Open; 2 3YO Fillies); 3 x 890m (2 3YO; 1 Maiden)

Later trials had the worst of the conditions as the weather deteriorated.

LAURE ME IN (David Pfeiffer): Came from a distant last, giving the breakaway leader 15 lengths from the 800m, to win the fastest of the three 1100m heats (65.86; 35.92). Surged over the last 200m under a tight hold from Tommy Berry and while it was only a narrow margin on the line his strong effort confirmed that this much improved gelding is holding his form.

LAURELIN (James Cummings): An eye catching first trial by this Lonhro filly. Settled four lengths of the lead in her 900m heat before she tracked up easily behind a line of three on the turn. Peeled four wide and cruised past for the softest of wins, posting good time (54.93; 34.67) for the conditions. Reckon the Godolphin stable have an opinion of this one.

SHAQUERO (Chris Waller): There was a lot more intent with the Breeders Plate winner this time after his soft first-up trial at Rosehill on November 30. Jumped into the bit to lead his 900m heat at his own speed and James McDonald only had to give him the slightest squeeze at the 250m to get an immediate response that saw him extend like a good horse. Easy as you like to the line to score by 1.8 lengths (54.95; 35.08), leaving his rivals spread out over big margins at the finish.

IRISH ANGEL (Chris Waller): She's only one once in 11 starts but there is good depth in her form, especially on wet tracks. This was her first trial since August and the way she controlled her 895m heat (54.48; 34.10) was dominant with Tommy Berry giving her the quietest of rides as she cruised clear in her favoured conditions over the last 300m.
