ROSEHILL January 27

Course Proper/Inside Grass; Good 4

17 Heats – Course Proper 2 x 900m (Group/Listed); Inside Grass 3 x 1030m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 12 x 896m (6 2YO; 2 Open; 1 3YO; 3 Maiden)

Arch rivals NATURE STRIP and BIVOUAC hooked up in the first of the Group trials over 900m on the course proper in a dress rehearsal for their autumn campaigns.

NATURE STRIP had the benefit of his earlier trial on January 15 and this time was his dominant self as he cruised through his gears for a comfortable one length win over BIVOUAC in reasonable time (54.94; 34.98). Notably he didn't wear ear muffs as he did on January 15 and relaxed easily under a quiet James McDonald ride.

BIVOUAC was equally as good as he sat off the leaders and tracked NATURE STRIP from the 600m without being asked for a serious effort by Rachel King. Behind them the classy SEPTEMBER RUN looked strong went through the motions under no pressure to finish a soft fifth.

The second Group heat saw a welcome return by the G1 winner SAMADOUBT in his first trial in 66 weeks since he last raced in the spring of 2019. It was an auspicious return as he jumped into the lead and set a solid pace to run out a comfortable winner although the time was much slower than the first heat (55.85; 35.30). VERRY ELLEEGANT tracked wide and was given an easy time while Oaks winner COLETTE and I AM SUPERMAN were getting into their work in good style in the closing stages.

PELTZER was too classy for his rivals in his 1030m open heat (63.34; 35.01), leading easily and having plenty in the locker on the line. The unraced filly VANILLA SKY has obvious prospects after recording her second trial win in the quickest of the three 1030m heats (62.86; 35.09). She opened up a big lead before she was throttled down in the last 50 metres to beat the fast closing KING OF SPARTA, a promising 2YO who has been placed in four trials.

There was plenty of talent on display in the 2YO trials over 896m with the exciting Melbourne colt PROFITEEER running up to his reputation with a dominant win in the fastest heat for the age group (53.03; 33.82). Other 2YO heat winners to make an impression were EMERALD BAY (53.92; 34.32); HEAD OF STATE (54.07; 34.31), PERKOVA (53.34; 34.21) and NASDAQ DUBAI (54.19; 34.35), a sharp type who kidded to his rivals over the last 400m under a cheeky ride.

The fastest 896m heat winner was the low flying MALKOVICH (52.45; 33.02), no surprise as he is a genuine short course specialist.  As a comparison the classy stablemates GREYWORM (54.50; 34.20) and NORTH PACIFIC (54.55; 34.41) had to work to win their heats in much slower time but are obviously in good shape for the start of their campaigns.

If one quality horse stood out in the 896m heats it was THE ELANORA. This high class 3YO trucked to the line under a big hold to finish fourth behind NORTH PACIFIC and is set for a big autumn.
