Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Hawkesbury (May 10) and Rosehill (May 11).
ROSEHILL May 11
Inside Grass; Heavy 8
10 Heats – 3 x 1030m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 7 x 900m (2 Open; 4 2YO; 1 Maiden)
MALKOVICH (Bjorn Baker): The standout trial of the morning saw this speedster score by 10 lengths, running away from his rivals over the last 400m in the fastest of the seven 900m heats (53.54; 33.92) some seven tenths faster the next best. He's won four times up to 1100m and will take some catching over a short course.

SACRED FIELD (Hawkes Racing): A classy first trial by this Deep Field colt saw him cruise to an unextended win by 5.5 lengths in the fastest of the four 2YO heats over 900m (54.29; 34.88). His baldy white face should become a familiar sight. HURIWAI is another newcomer who took the eye running strongly into second place.
Bjorn Baker had plenty to smile about after three heat wins led by the flying MALKOVICH. He would also have positive plans for stablemates CANASTA after his 1030m heat win (64.00; 36.11) and MATOWATAKPE sweeping home to win his 900m heat (55.60; 35.40).
While SACRED FIELD was an impressive winner in his 2YO heat his stablemate BRECHEN also showed talent with an easy win in his 900m heat (56.03; 36.11), coasting the line with an economical action. BRIGHT FLIGHT was another bigger 2YO winner by eight lengths in her 900m heat in slow time (55.65; 35.38). While beaten a big margin the runner-up BEIRUT MISS took the eye late. Chris Waller's $1.4 million colt MONTENEGRO was also noteworthy with the way he finished off his 900m heat for a strong win in slow time (56.15; 35.92). It was his first win in four trials and he is ready to go the races.
A strong finish from $1.4m colt Montenegro to win a @rosehillgardens trial on Tuesday for @mcacajamez and @cwallerracing beating Miss Worthington and Tuhinga. @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/OsnlMFmeZk

HAWKESBURY May 10
Inside Grass; Soft 7
18 Heats – 1 x 1250m (Open); 6 x 1000m (2 Open; 2 2YO; 2 Maiden); 11 x 800m (2 Open; 6 2YO; 3 Maiden)
Average set of provincial trials boosted by runners from some major stables.
John O'Shea would have been happy with fast debut 800m trial wins by his 2YO fillies VERONICA JANE (48.14; 33.65) and COMRADE ROSA (47.41; 33.15) while the Godolphin youngster WHEEL showed he had come on nicely from his race debut with a sharp heat win (47.69; 33.26).
The fastest 1000m trial was won by Blake Ryan's 2YO CRITICAL TIME (59.83; 34.53). The Matt Dunn-trained I AM GOOD AT THIS won his 1000m heat in good style (60.46; 35.55) after showing talent in four previous trials.
