Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney barrier trials at Warwick Farm on October 5 and Randwick on October 8 with noted horses to follow.

Kensington – 4 x 850m (4 2YO)

More critical trials for Everest contenders with CLASSIQUE LEGEND and EDUARDO doing all that was expected of them in their heats.

CLASSIQUE LEGEND (Les Bridge): Given first use of the A grass, the big grey was ridden with confidence by Kerrin McEvoy to sit one our one back in his 1050m heat (63.04; 33.93) before cruising to the leaders under a big hold inside the last 200m. His margin was less than a head in a three way finish but nobody can doubt Les Bridge has him on song to defend his Everest title first-up after his long break. The question is will his trials be enough or will the lack of match practice find him out under race pressure. A super trial from the Kiwi mare ENTRIVIERE to track through from third on the rail and finish a close second under no pressure says she will take beating when next produced over the carnival. MAZU led them up and also trialled well within himself to finish a close third.

EDUARDO (Joe Pride): He was reserved for the first of the shorter 735m heats and wasn't out to break the clock (43.50; 33.48). Led easily and with the track chopping out Nash Rawiller made sure he kept the big sprinter away from the inside and allowed him to do as much as was required to coast home by more than a length from the classy Group performer DAWN PASSAGE. SOUTHERN LAD is a good trial and he took the eye charging through the pack from last for a strong third.

The fastest 1050m heat win was recorded by the trial enigma RUSSIAN STANDARD. He cleared out for a big nine lengths win in hot time (61.27; 33.87) to remain unbeaten in six trials while his race record reads two placings from three starts due to his race day and barrier behaviour. The day he puts it all together he will blow away a maiden field. 

Maiden 735m heat winners AVOIDANCE (43.46; 33.64) and URBAN JEWEL (43.46; 33.40) went faster than EDUARDO which makes their trial form worthy of attention. The big trial among the maidens came from the previously noted PIZARRO as he surged to the line behind AVOIDANCE after weaving his way through the field from last.

The four 2YO trials over 850m on the Kensington track saw GINGER'S GAL pushed out to win the fastest heat (49.90; 33.41) but the youngster that made the best impression was SECRET REVOLUTION working well within himself for a strong win in his heat (50.14; 33.57).

A Grass - 2 x 1200m (2 Open); 4 x 800m (2 2YO; 2 Open); 3 x 796m (1 Open; 2 C1/maiden); 3 x 793m (3 C1/Maiden)

Polytrack – 2 x 1175m (2 Open); 8 x 740m (3 Open; 5 Maiden)

A huge session with an inconclusive performance by Everest contender GYTRASH overshadowed by sparkling heat wins by a pair of sharp short course sprinters.

BLAZING MISS (Mark Newnham): The second trial by this talented mare has her in great shape for a bold first-up showing in a suitable sprint, preferably for her own sex. She was never off the bit controlling her 800m heat from the front for a soft win that could have seen her run faster time (46.98; 33.17) if pressured. Back in third was GYTRASH, who was in a line of four behind the leaders at the 500m but came off the bit and was put under a ride from the 400m. He only picked up in the last 50 metres to be beaten 2.6 lengths and while he will be better over 1200m under race conditions it did not build confidence in his Everest prospects.

MALKOVICH (Bjorn Baker): It would be a contest to find a quicker horse over 800m in Sydney. He won an 800m trial by eight lengths on his home track on September 21 and this was a repeat as he flew over the trip in a fast 45.98 (32.88). He is set to fly first-up in any short course sprint Baker can find for him. The good mare LASHES, also having her second trial after a sharp win at Warwick Farm on September 21, chased keenly to cut his margin back to just 2 lengths, an effort that points to her performing well in her right class first-up.
