Trial Watch Reviews: 20th December - 21st December 2021

3 minute read

Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Wyong on December 20 and Canterbury on December 21.

CANTERBURY December 21

Course Proper; Soft 5

19 Heats – 4 x 1100m (4 Open); 7 x 890m (2 Open; 5 2YO); 8 x 885m (2 3YO; 3 C1/Maiden; 3 Maiden)

More use of the excellent Canterbury track for trials. Suspect there will be some very good 2YO form come out of the juvenile heats.

DAJRAAN (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): First look at this UK-bred son of Frankel out of the Golden Slipper winner Mossfun. Left the UK after a 1400m win in August and is ready to go on with it after an impressive win in a fast 890m open heat (54.58; 35.31). Looked classy tracking the leader before moving up smoothly in the last 200m and doing his best work late to quickly put a 1.6 lengths margin on the opposition.

PORTRAY (James Cummings): Ribchester filly could be a good 2YO prospect for Godolphin after an impressive win her first trial over 890m (56.22; 36.20). Travelled three wide from the 600m but was always under a big hold from Rachel King and had her rivals well covered over the last 200m where she was eager to go faster.

METALLICITY (Peter & Paul Snowden): Imposing Zoustar colt settled one out and one back in his trial over 890m before letting down with a big striding action for a dominant win in the fastest of the five 2YO heats (55.29; 35.78). Has the talent to match his robust looks.

Other 2YOs to impress in their heats were the Capitalist colt LONDON winning his first trial over 890m with something hand (56.76; 36.27) and an eye catching third by Godolphin's well bred filly SUMATRA (Lonhro x Earthquake) under an easy ride from Rachel King.

The maiden and C1 heats over 885m should also produce some worthy form. The John O'Shea-trained pair CYBER ATTACK (54.04; 35.30) and CORDYCEPS HERO (54.72; 35.30) posted strong wins in fast times for the session and stablemate RUINART also has good prospects after a late closing second in the heat won by FLYING ANNIE (54.89; 35.60).

DUCHESS OF SAVOY, VOLTS, LUCILIGHT and the previously noted SUPER VOGUE and WARMTH all did enough in their heats to warrant respect when they go to the races.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Dajraan; Portray; Metallicity

X Aim; Cordyceps Hero; Cyber Attack; Duchy Of Savoy; Kung Fu Mushu; London; Lucilight; Madame Pommery; Montserrat; Opacity; Princess Zeddy; Ruinart; Sky Command; Stick To Your Gun; Straight Arrow; Sumatra; Superium; Volts; Warmth

WYONG December 20

Course Proper; Good 4

17 Heats – 10 x 845m (4 2YO (rail true); 2 Open (Cones out 6 metres); 4 Maiden (Cones out 6 Metres); 2 x 1200m (2 Open - Cones out 6 metres); 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 3 maiden – Cones out 6 metres)

Leading city stables took advantage of the four 2YO heats to prepare their youngsters for racing with one standout performance.

SECRET REVOLUTION (Peter & Paul Snowden): This Russian Revolution colt was the standout winner of the session with a classy win in the first 845m trial, easily setting the time standard for the 10 heats over the distance (48.84; 33.90). Settled three lengths off a pair of leaders until straightening where he showed classy acceleration to sprint past them under no pressure and coast to a soft 3.28 lengths. In effect he picked up six lengths in 200 metres – a sure sign of above average talent. He won a Randwick trial at the start of the season and he has obviously come on from his city race debut in October.

CAMP RIFLE (Tony Newing): Cruised to an easy 4.4 lengths in the fastest of the two 1200m heats (72.04; 35.14), an effort that says he is set to bounce back strongly from his last start on a heavy track in the Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai. He's picked up a couple of country cups this season and is in the right form to add to his record as the stable is always eager to travel to country carnivals.

TRAJECTION (1000m 61.56; 35.33) and MOONSHINE LADY (845m 49.83; 34.53) were two of the better open company heat winners. FIELDING, an unraced Deep Field 3YO, looks to have a future after a strong maiden heat win over 845m (49.35; 34.54).

NOTED TRIALS

XX Camp Rifle; Secret Revolution

X Boomsita; Café Royal; Fielding; Icecrusher; Impendment; Moonshine Lady; Phule; The Seeker; The Winter Sun; Trajection
