RANDWICK April 23

Today's Best Plays

RACE 4 (4) ALEAS: This Waller import made the right impression in his Australian debut when working home nicely over 1400m for fourth in this class behind his stablemate O'President at Newcastle on March 28. Rare for the stable that he did not trial before the Newcastle run but he's since put in a solid third in an 1185m heat at Warwick Farm that has him ready to tackle this more suitable distance. He was a Listed winner of four races in the UK up to 2227m and two of those wins were on genuine heavy tracks. The one to beat if he brings that form to this class. Save on the quinella with his stablemate IRISH SEQUEL.

RACE 5 (9) AMERICAN PRESIDENT: Still no escaping the heavy tracks and few horses have been going better in the tough conditions. He's lining up for the hat trick after two big wins in the heavy at Goulburn and Canterbury and while he's meeting tougher opposition he gets in with a nice weight under conditions he is certain to relish. He's value from his draw (9) with the rail out an extreme 11 metres as past history shows that horses getting to the outside have been favoured under similar placements in the wet.

RACE 8 (3) DIAMIL: Another progressive import who has been quick to make his mark in his two local starts on heavy tracks for John O'Shea. Made the expected improvement off his first-up second at Canterbury to record an easy 1600m win at short odds in this class at Warwick Farm when he posted the best closing sectional of the day. Not surprised that the form out of that race is excellent, already producing two subsequent winners including the G3 Packer Plate winner Verona, and with McDonald sticking it's a reasonable assumption that he has not reached his ceiling.

TRIAL POINTERS

WARWICK FARM April 11 (Polytrack): BETHENCOURT was impressive in his 1175m heat win (70.99; 35.74), coming three wide from the rear with a long run from the 600m while the free-wheeling SPACEBOY (70.18; 34.98) showed his usual pace to win his heat by six lengths.

WARWICK FARM April 8 (Polytrack): Godolphin's PANDEMIC worked strongly to run second in his open heat over 740m (44.09; 33.14) won by stablemate Geist. PANDEMIC has now had two trials and is always at his best when he runs fresh.

RANDWICK April 4: No knock on the 1045m heat win by last start Melbourne winner GLISTENING (63.86; 35.31). The Waterhouse/Bott juvenile COMMAND APPROVED won his heat over 736m (44.03; 34.12). He was strong through the line after covering plenty of ground and appeals as the right type for the Brisbane carnival. The speedy DUCHESS kept running to win a strong 736m heat in good time (43.83; 33.95).
