RANDWICK May 28

Best Bets

RACE 3 (7) AND WE DANCED: Looks the right race for this former Kiwi filly after finishing runner-up in three of her four Australian starts up to 1600m since coming to the Waller stable. Struck early trouble before posting excellent sectionals working to the line strongly to be beaten less than a length over 1300m at Scone when resuming and is certain to find the extra trip to her liking. Strong form on soft tracks under race conditions and she's been very good in trials in the heavy. Expect to see her get the last run at them.

RACE 6 (14) COMRADE ROSA: Plenty of good reasons to support this filly at double figure odds in a race full of chances. After winning first-up over 1200m on a soft track at Newcastle she performed without luck in two strong black type races at the Randwick carnival and then again had plenty of excuses when fifth in the Listed Denise's Joy over 1100m at the Scone meeting on May 14. She had to be taken back to last from a wide gate and gave away too much start when wearing blinkers for the first time. She's back to her best trip and is nicely placed in this class from a better draw with the advantage of the claim for Reece Jones.

RACE 8 (10) ANIMATE: Expecting sharp improvement on his first-up sixth in the Listed Takeover Target (1200m) at Gosford on May 7 where a wide gate saw him set an impossible task from the back of a big field. He's a three time winner when second up, boasts four wins on soft and heavy tracks and it's easy to see 1400m is his best distance with four wins over the trip. Gets in nicely with only 50kg after a 3kg claim, giving him a big weight edge over rivals coming back from 1600m.

For Value

RACE 4: (6) TWO UP is good value in a race of limited chances. He's a hard fit wet tracker certain to run well in his favoured conditions with the benefit of a 2kg claim. (3) CALGARY QUEEN and (1) LANCASTER BOMBER rate well but doubt they hold any scope for improvement. (13) ROVER is a silly price.

RACE 7: It's easy to be forgiving of the favourite (3) ANDERMATT. He deserves another chance back at Randwick but the luckless efforts of (7) SURREAL STEP since resuming point to him coming to his peak third up. He's the best value for the exotics.

RACE 9: Tricky affair. (9) FRENCH MARINE is going well on heavy tracks and has race fitness on his side. A fitter (8) COTEHELE is set to peak and a fresh (16) KALINO looks ready off excellent trials - but it doesn't end there.

RACE 10: (7) AMERICAN PRESIDENT rates on top. He revels in heavy ground and benefits from a 2kg claim but you can easily look elsewhere. (3) QUEEN BELLISSIMO is an honest mare who has trialled well since her first-up placing, the in-form (2) SNOWZONE is well treated after the claim, (6) HULK rarely wins but is always around the money and (14) NO LAUGHING MATTER likes the heavy and comes off a nice trial win.

TRIAL POINTERS

RANDWICK May 20: LAWS OF INDICES had been given a month to freshen up after his good autumn carnival campaign and impressed with a surging finish to be beaten a half length in his 1030m heat (64.81; 35.94). Settled back between runners and was full of running with little room to move for much of the last 400m before getting clear air to run through the line in great style. Set for a trip to Brisbane where he could be a real Stradbroke Handicap threat. In the quickest 900m heat 54.35; 34.52) the strong closing efforts of WILD PLANET and QUEEN BELLISSIMO took the eye.

GOSFORD May 18: NO LAUGHING MATTER won a strong 1000m heat in good time (61.52; 37.12), picking up a tearaway leader at the 300m and going to the line generously after he was given a crack with the whip to keep his mind on the job. Mark down the placegetter SAQUON as another to follow out of this good heat.

RANDWICK May 16: The classy Group performer PRIVATE EYE (2nd) did enough in his open trial over 1050m to be in good shape for intended Brisbane targets.

WARWICK FARM April 11 (Poly): PRIVATE EYE settled closer than his normal style in his 1175m heat and only had to peel off the backs of the leaders on the turn to put them away under a soft ride in slow time (72.42;42; 35.70).

ROSEHILL February 21  ALLIGATOR BLOOD's dominant trial was ample proof of the progress made by this talent packed gelding in the two weeks from his first trial placing since his switch to Tulloch Lodge. He had no trouble leading his 1030m heat at his own speed before sprinting up a fast last 400m to score by more than six lengths (61.50; 34.13) with Tim Clark giving him a kind ride.

RANDWICK February 7: The black type heat over 900m on the course proper (54.08; 35.25) saw ALLIGATOR BLOOD finished second in his first trial since his latest stable switch to the Waterhouse/Bott team. He was given a solid hitout to lead before he was ridden along over the last 200m as his condition faltered.
