Miss Tainui’s win at Bendigo brings up metro double for Coolmore Stud-based Vancouver

The Chris Waller-trained Aslav (2 c Vancouver - Anatole by Quiet American) got his career off to the best possible start when he made a winning debut over 1100 metres at Hawkesbury on Wednesday.

The son of Coolmore Stud-based sire Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) defeated Cool Lad (Al Maher) by three-quarters of a length, while Aeecee Express (Savabeel) was a further length and three-quarters away in third.

The colt was purchased by JCS Racing for $80,000 at the 2020 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the Cornerstone Stud draft, before being bought by James Harron Bloodstock for $260,000 at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale later that year.

Aslav is the second winner out of unplaced Quiet American (Fappiano) mare Anatole, who was herself purchased by Ben Glass for US$70,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, before being bought by Cornerstone Stud for US$50,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in 2018 and she was carrying Aslav in utero.

Anatole herself is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Man From Wicklow (Turkoman) and Grade 2 scorer Wild Heart Dancing (Farma Way).

Further back this is the same pedigree as Grade 2 scorer Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) and Grade 3 winner Chess’s Dream (Jess’s Dream).

Meanwhile at Bendigo, Vancouver was provided with a metropolitan double when the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Miss Tainui (3 f ex Madame Echezeaux by Montjeu) got off the mark at the first attempt over 1400 metres.

The three-year-old filly scooted clear to beat Fan Club (Pins) by a length, while Sacred Snow (Redoute’s Choice) was a further nose away in third.

Miss Tainui was purchased by her trainers for NZ$130,000 from the Pencarrow Stud draft at Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2019 and she is out of the unraced Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Madame Echezeaux.

Madame Echezeaux herself is a daughter of Group 1 winner Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel), making her a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning champion and successful sire Darci Brahma (Danehill) and Group 3 winner Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), who stood at Cambridge Stud until his untimely death in 2019.

Further afield the filly hails from the same family as multiple Group 1-winning champion Ethereal (Rhythm).

Vancouver has sired 27 winners in total and they are headed by stakes-winning duo; South African Grade 2 scorer Mount Pleasant and Listed winner Madone.
