Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained son of Flying Artie swoops at Randwick

The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Flying Crazy (Flying Artie) scored an impressive debut victory in Wednesday’s Astern @ Darley Maiden Plate (1100m) at Randwick Kensington. 

Under Jay Ford, the gelding was second last at the home turn and ran on impressively, out wide, in the straight to get up in the closing stages and beat Devil’s Throat (Snitzel) by a nose in a photo finish. 

The winning time was 1:02.61 and Flying Crazy ran his last 600 metres in 34.59 and his last 200 metres in 11.10 seconds. He holds entries for both the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). 

“The stable gave him a good push and said he was a nice horse,” said Ford.

“Once he got balanced and I got him to the outside, he showed what he can do.

“He’s obviously got a bright future.”

Flying Crazy was bought for $40,000 by WBF Thoroughbreds and Equi Com Syndications from the draft of Newgate Farm at last year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He becomes the first winner for his dam, Forever Crazy (Encosta De Lago), a half-sister to the dam of Group Two winner Hawkshot (Fiorente) and his Listed winning brother Power Scheme (Fiorente). 

Equi Com Syndications bought Flying Crazy’s Russian Revolution (Snitzel) half-brother for $80,000 at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. 

Newgate Farm-based Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) finished third in the leading first season sires table in Australia last season behind barnmates Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and Capitalist (Written Tycoon).
