The coronavirus pandemic has claimed the career of Group 1-winning sprinter Brutal (O'Reilly) and he will now retire to Newgate Farm - who purchased a 50 per cent in the entire last year.

Last season's Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner was being prepared for upcoming Group 1 races in Queensland ahead of a trip to Britain for the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) during Royal Ascot.

Racing Queensland abandoned their entire winter carnival last week in order to race under a regionalised model while there's huge uncertainty whether Royal Ascot will be held in its traditional form during June as the British Horseracing Authority attempts to restart racing from May 1.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of the sport, Brutal's large ownership group opted to retire the four-year-old to stud.

"It's disappointing but that's the way the cookie crumbles," said Newgate Farm's managing director Henry Field.

"The long-range plan was to bring him back and run him in Brisbane and Rupert (Legh, part-owner) had aspirations to go to Royal Ascot.

"If we could have envisaged this would have happened we would have got him ready for the All Aged Stakes but it wasn't to be. It's just a shame we couldn't knock off a few more Group 1 races before he went to stud."

The colt is out of Group 3-placed mare Alberton Princess (Golan) making him a brother to Listed-winning filly Talaria.

Alberton Princess herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Te Akau Rose (Thorn Park) and Listed placed Dancing Bridges (Danske) - the dam of Listed winner Testarhythm (Testa Rossa), while she is also the half-sister to Alberton Rose (Danske) - who in turn produced Group 3 winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).

Further back this is family of Group 2-winning pair Sir Alberton (Red Tempo) and Alberton Star (Stylish Century), with the latter the dam of Group 3 winner Lady Alberton (Golan) and Listed winner Alberton Park (Thorn Park) and Group 1 winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj).

Field is confident the son of O'Reilly (Last Tycoon) will prove popular at stud: "Brutal is a beautiful horse with an out-cross pedigree that ticks all the boxes and I'm sure will be well received in the Hunter Valley," said Field.

"He is a lightly raced, highly talented horse that hopefully can fill the footsteps of his father O'Reilly as a very dominant sire for years to come."

Trained by Team Hawkes, Brutal won five of his ten starts, including his first three starts in the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Antler Luggage Plate (Listed, 1400m) and over $2.6 million in prize money.

Brutal finished second behind Winx (Street Cry) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), before taking out the Doncaster Mile.

After being brought back as a four-year-old Brutal won the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last spring.

A fee for Brutal will be announced at a later date.
