Young Darley stallion Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) sired his second stakes winner on Saturday as the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Extra Time (2 g ex Gwynethanne by Handsome Ransom) broke his maiden in the National Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville.

Last seen running seventh in the Queen Adelaide Stakes (Listed, 1050m) two weeks ago, Extra Time showed he thrived over the longer trip, beating expensive colt Kazuhiko (Deep Impact) by three and a half lengths with another nose back to Hard Rock Girl (All Too Hard) in third.

McDonald runs one of Adelaide's best stables in association with his son-in-law Andrew Gluyas and the veteran trainer said Extra Time had always shown promise.

"The horse has been racing really well without much luck ... I think the blinkers made all the difference to him," McDonald said.

"(Although) he looked to be a bit too keen to me, but by the time they got to the corner I sort of had a look back through the field and there were a lot of horses under pressure."

Purchased by his trainers for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the Armidale Stud draft, the gelding is out of Group 2 placed Gwynethanne (Handsome Ransom).

Further back this is the family of Group 1 winners Magic Of Sydney (Danehill) and Daney Boy (Danehill), Group 3-winning pair Consommateur (Roc De Cambes) and Manolo Blahniq (Jimmy Choux) and Listed-winning duo Floramour (More Than Ready) and Sovereign Chief (Sovereign Edition).

Gwynethanne was bought by Aquis Farm for $85,000 at last year's Inglis Chairman's Sale from the draft of Rothwell Park as agent.

Her colt by Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral) was purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock for $105,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in March having been sold as a weanling for $30,000, while last year she produced a filly by Darley's young stallion Impending (Lonhro) last October.

Shooting To Win will stand at Darley's Kelvinside base for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST) in 2020, while his other stakes winner is Group 3 winner Ms Catherine. He has also sired four stakes performers in Charleton Eddie, Kubrick, Dom To Shoot and Shotmaker.
