Prominent Western Australian owner Bob Peters' faith in Vancouver's (Medaglia d'Oro) potential as a stallion paid off on Wednesday as Dunbar (2 g ex Koonya by Nadeem) broke his maiden on debut in the TABtouch-Better Your Club Maiden Plate (1200m) at Pinjarra and in so doing became the Coolmore Stud-based stallion's fourth first-crop winner.

Trained by Grant and Alana Williams, the gelding stayed on strongly all the way to the line to beat Nobellity (Alfred Nobel) by a neck with another two lengths back to The Spruiker (I'm All The Talk) in third.

The gelding was purchased by John Ramsey from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for $70,000 before being purchased by Hunter Valley Bloodstock on behalf Peters for $180,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race.

"He has always shown plenty of ability at home and has only ever had one gallop (where he won his trial by five lengths), so he was a bit soft today," said Peters.

"We would've preferred to run him over 1000m, but the only option was to go straight to 1200 metres.

"He will improve out of sight with the run and hopefully there are bigger races in store for him in the future."

Dunbar is out of the winning Nadeem (Redoute's Choice) mare Koonya and he becomes her third winner from as many foals to race.

Koonya herself is a half-sister to South African Grade 2 winner Brazuca (Teofilo) and Listed scorer Mr Utopia (Elusive Quality).

Further back this is the family of Group 2 winner and 1998 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Catnipped (Jory's Jester).

Koonya's yearling by Newgate Farm-based sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) was purchased by Trevor Sutherland Racing for $80,000 at this year's Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and the mare has most recently been covered by Darley shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

Dunbar joins Postcode, Vangelic and Montia as the stallion's other first-crop winners and he will stand the 2020 season for a fee of $30,250 (inc GST).
