The James Cummings-trained Jeronimos (2 c ex Viana by Volksraad) ran out a ready winner of the TLE Maiden Handicap (1200m) at the Newcastle on Saturday and in the process provided Contributer (High Chaparral) with his second first-crop winner.

The two-year-old colt pulled clear to Brutality (Shamus Award) by half a length with another length and three quarters back to Sammy (Medaglia d’Oro) in third.

Purchased by Godolphin for NZ$250,000 at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, the colt is out of Listed-winning mare Viana (Volksraad), whose other foal to race is also a winner.

The colt’s third dam is Group 2 scorer and Group 1-placed mare Melora (Sir Tristram), who is herself a three-quarter sister to fellow Group 2 winner Piper Star (Kaapstad).

In 2018 Viana produced a filly by late Waikato sire Pins (O’Reilly) and foaled a colt by Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) the following season. The mare has most recently been covered by former Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

Jeronimos joins Lion’s Roar as Contributer’s other winner and he stands at Mapperley Stud in New Zealand for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).
