Albarado impresses at Ballarat

Savabeel (Zabeel) debutant Albarado (2 c ex O’Fille by O’Reilly) scored a narrow but good victory at Ballarat over 1200 metres on Sunday. Away well from the gates, he settled down in third position just behind the leaders one off the fence with a trail. He loomed large on turning for home and showed a good turn of foot to go clear by three lengths.

Albarado was left a sitting shot in front and started to tire a little but had enough in reserve to withstand the late challenge of the Godolphin first starter Alcyone (Teofilo) on his outside, to score by a quarter of a length.

Albarado, a NZ$140,000 purchase from the NZB Premier Yearling Sale by his trainers Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young, is the first foal out of O’Fille (O’Reilly) winner of the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and placed second in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m). Further merit should be added to his good performance today considering the amount of stamina in his pedigree being inbred to Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) 3x4 and out of amare who won up to 2000 metres. Spring classic aspirations have been mooted by his trainers.

The runner-up Alcyone should also be noted for the future, he closed well from back in the field covering ground throughout. He took the home turn on the outside and closed strongly to just miss. He too has plenty of stamina in his pedigree being the fourth foal out of the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Purple (Commands), while his second dam is by Zabeel and won up to 2050m. Both colts pulled well clear of the rest of the field and look destined to better things over more ground.
